MAVERICKS BEGIN CRUCIAL WEEKEND AGAINST EMPORIA STATE
The seventh-ranked and MIAA-leading UNO softball team continues its stretch of eight games in six days with a pair of doubleheaders against the two teams directly behind them in the MIAA standings this weekend. UNO is looking to lock up its first ever outright MIAA regular-season title, but second-place Emporia State and third-place Missouri Western will visit Claussen-Westgate Field this weekend and try to overtake UNO at the top of the standings. UNO and Emporia State will begin their Friday doubleheader at 3 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader against Missouri Western at 12 p.m., is Senior Day and Alumni Day.
UNO (38-6, 15-1) holds a slight lead over 18th-ranked Emporia State, who sits at 15-3 in conference play. The two teams shared the regular-season title in 2010. The Mavs, winners of 20 of their last 21, are 6-18 all-time against Emporia State. The two teams played seven times last year with Emporia State holding a 5-2 advantage. The Hornets defeated the Mavs in the MIAA Championship Game last year, 10-1.
COMING DOWN THE HOME STRETCH
The Mavericks have just three remaining series this season: two this weekend and one at Truman on Monday, May 2. UNO begins play at the MIAA Conference Tournament next Thursday at Blue Valley Softball Complex in Overland Park, Kan. The Mavs can clinch at least a share of the regular-season title by winning four of their remaining six games.
AWARD-WINNING MAVS
The Mavs have been well represented this season in the weekly MIAA Player of the Week awards. Beth Haley, the reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Year, has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week three times this year, while All-American Lindsey Slocum has earned the honor once. Four Mavs have been named MIAA Hitter of the Week as well - Slocum, Katelyn Hinton, Amber Lutmer and Molly Feichtinger.
HALEY ON FIRE
Beth Haley is 17-2 in the circle with a 0.84 ERA for the Mavericks in her senior season. The Highland, Ind., native has pitched 18 complete games in 19 starts and has recorded nine shutouts. Haley pitched 40 straight innings without allowing an earned run in a six-game span from March 23 through April 5. The Mavs have won the last 15 games that Haley has started.
SLOCUM CHASING THE RECORD
Lindsey Slocum's 150 career RBIs entering this weekend rank third all-time in school history. Slocum needs just four RBIs to move into second place and just nine to set the school record for career RBIs, currently held by Holly Voss at 158 (1994-97).
