Palensky's Grand Slam Helps Mavs Advance to MIAA C

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The UNO baseball team battled its way through the losers bracket to earn a spot in the MIAA Championship Game, defeating nationally-ranked Emporia State 9-2 on Saturday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The Mavericks improved to 35-19 on the year, while ESU finished its MIAA Tournament run with a 42-10 overall record.
Junior Cory Buckley (5-3) earned the complete-game win, allowing two runs on 10 hits over nine innings. Buckley totaled three strikeouts to one walk in his biggest victory of the season. Emporia State's Jake Hosey (6-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs – two earned – on five hits over 5.2 innings of work. Hosey had three strikeouts and gave up three walks.
Freshman Caleb Palensky came through with his first career grand slam, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four runs driven in.
Senior Jed Hanson also went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while juniors Brandon Winkelmann and Martin Sartin both scored twice.
The Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, but the Mavericks came right back in the bottom of the frame to knot it at 2-2. The tie stood for three more innings, when UNO broke it open in the sixth with a trio of runs. Coupled with two hits, UNO capitalized on four ESU errors to take the 5-2 lead.
Nebraska Omaha clinched it in the eighth, putting up four runs on four hits. Winkelmann, Sartin and junior Brady Hohl all had consecutive singles to load the bases for Palensky, who sent a shot over the wall and gave the Mavs their final score of 9-2.
Sunday's conference championship against fifth-ranked Central Missouri is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. With a Maverick win against the undefeated Mules, a second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. UNO must win both games to claim the MIAA crown.
