2011 UNO Volleyball Schedule
OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO volleyball program has announced the completion of the 2011 season schedule, Head Coach Rose Shires announced Wednesday.
Nebraska Omaha, which will begin its transition to NCAA Division I in 2011-12, has a schedule packed with regional road games and also includes the UNO Volleyball Showcase. Additionally, UNO will play four red/black team scrimmages, with three on Friday nights at Sapp Fieldhouse.
“We are very excited to announce the 2011 volleyball schedule,” Shires said. “We feel that we have the best of both worlds in this transition to Division I. We are able to play the best of the best in NCAA Division II as well as play many teams from the Summit League and the Missouri Valley Conference. As we go forward as an NCAA Division I volleyball program, this will offer our current student-athletes the opportunity to play at a very high level the entire season.
“We have three officially-scheduled home dates, which is disappointing for our seniors and our fans, but the majority of our road games will be close enough for all to see. Our players and staff are enthusiastic about our season schedule and look forward to a successful first year in Division I competition.”
The Mavericks kick off the year with a red/black scrimmage on Aug. 20 and then begin the regular season at the Bradley Tournament, Aug. 26-27 in Peoria, Ill. In its first taste of Division I competition, UNO will face Illinois-Chicago of the Horizon League and tournament host Bradley of the MVC.
The annual UNO Volleyball Showcase is set for Sept. 2-3 at Sapp Fieldhouse and features eight quality teams: Augustana, Minnesota State Moorhead, Northwest Missouri State, Northern State, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Arkansas-Fort Smith, Nebraska-Kearney and Winona State. The Mavericks will face Winona State and Augustana on opening day, followed by Northern State and a showdown with Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday.
Nebraska Omaha faces its first Summit League foe on Sept. 6, traveling to South Dakota State. The Mavs continue with a road trip to the Premier Volleyball Classic, Sept. 9-10 in Denver, Colo., before returning home for their second red/black scrimmage on Sept. 16.
UNO sees its second MVC opponent on Sept. 20, hitting the road to face Wichita State. The following week is highlighted by a Dakota duo, with a match at North Dakota on Sept. 24 and an anticipated home match against South Dakota on Sept. 27.
The Mavericks finish September at the Washburn Crossover Tournament, Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 in Topeka, Kan. The squad will face four familiar Division II teams in Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, Dallas Baptist and Central Oklahoma.
A week later, UNO comes home to Sapp Fieldhouse for another red/black scrimmage on Oct. 7, followed by three straight road matches: South Dakota (Oct. 11), Emporia State (Oct. 14) and Washburn (Oct. 15).
Oct. 21-22 will be a weekend of festivities for UNO volleyball fans and alumni with the final red/black scrimmage on Friday night and the alumni match and appreciation dinner on Saturday night. As in years past, the alumni game will feature two teams of former Maverick letterwinners, many of whom were all-conference and All-America selections during their careers.
After a match at in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney on Oct. 25, Nebraska Omaha closes the 2011 season on Oct. 29 with another Summit League matchup, traveling to North Dakota State.
UNO finished 2010 with a record of 17-15 and two All-MIAA honorees in Kayla Uhing and Natalie Ebke.
