OMAHA, Neb. -- The UNO women's volleyball team wrapped up its 2011 spring season and had three student-athletes receive spring team honors, Head Coach Rose Shires announced.
Sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Snyder was chosen as the spring strength training champion after breaking 11 personal lifting records.
“Chelsea's improved strength led to improved court performance this spring,” Shires said. Snyder also improved her vertical jump, increasing 2.5 inches from her previous mark.
The most improved player honor was given to freshman Ali Jansen for showing commitment to the volleyball program and a strong work ethic. Janssen spent her spring season learning to play as an outside hitter to improve the all around strength for the Mavs.
“Ali has proven herself as a competitive, consistent clutch player in both practice and games,” Shires said.
The final honor – the Leadership Award -- was given to team co-captain Brittany Hanssen. The award is granted annually to an athlete who proves herself as a steady force for the team.
“Brittany sets the compass for our team,” Shires said. “She leads by her work ethic, competitiveness and her excellent communication skills. Her teammates believe that she is the driving force that keeps the Mavericks positive on and off the court.”
The UNO volleyball team opens its 2011 season schedule at the Bradley Tournament, Aug. 26-27, in Peoria, Ill. The Mavericks also host their annual UNO Volleyball Showcase at Sapp Fieldhouse, Sept. 2-3.
