Hansen Adds Herbst, Eberhart to Men's Basketball S

OMAHA, Neb. – Two assistant men's basketball coaches have been hired at the University of Nebraska Omaha, Head Coach Derrin Hansen announced Thursday. Randall Herbst and Pat Eberhart will join the coaching staff as the Mavericks head into 2011-12 for their first year of Division I competition as members of The Summit League.
"I am pleased to have Randall Herbst and Pat Eberhart joining our staff in UNO's first year competing as a Division I program," Hansen said. "Having two coaches of their caliber is a major gain for our team, and their prior head coaching experience only makes us stronger as we move to The Summit League.
“We are especially fortunate to have some familiarity with Randall, as he was previously an assistant coach here for two years. He and Pat both bring Midwestern values and an understanding of what UNO basketball is all about. They are two exceptional hires, and our staff and student-athletes are ready for the challenges and opportunities that the 2011-12 season will present."
Herbst was previously an assistant coach at UNO from 2007 to 2009, helping the Mavs to a record of 42-18, a North Central Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in that span. He returns after serving as head coach for two seasons at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. In his time with the Marauders, Herbst compiled a record of 38-19, including a 29-13 mark in Northern Sun Conference play. He was responsible for turning the program's seven-win performance in 2008-09 into a 15-13 mark in 2009-10 with a fifth-place conference finish. In 2010-11, U-Mary posted a 23-6 record with a second-place conference effort, eventually earning a No. 18 national rank at the season's end. Herbst's 23 wins this past season were the most for the Marauders since 1987, bolstered by a 16-game win streak.
Additionally, Herbst was honored as the Division II Bulletin Coach of the Month in February of 2011 and was a finalist for the Clarence “Big House” Gaines Division II Coach of the Year award.
“I am very excited to be back at UNO working with Coach Hansen,” Herbst said. “We did some special things together a couple of years ago, and now it's time for round two. I am familiar with the UNO style of play and defensive philosophy, and I have the same beliefs on the importance of graduating players and the commitment of doing things the right way on and off the court. Coaching Division I is something I have thought about for many years, and I am thankful for my family to have this opportunity.”
Before first his stint at UNO, Herbst was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida Southern (2006-07). He also served in a similar position at North Dakota (2000-06), including time as associate head coach (2004-06).
Herbst graduated cum laude from Winona State with his bachelor's degree in physical education in 1993 and added a master's degree in sports administration from Minnesota State in 2005.
Herbst began his playing career at Waldorf Junior College, where he was a two-time all-region point guard and an outstanding student. After transferring to WSU, he was selected as team captain as a senior, where he was a two-sport athlete in basketball and baseball. Herbst helped the Warriors to back-to-back winning seasons in 1992 and 1993, capping his four-year career with 1,031 points scored.
Eberhart joins the Mavericks after a six-year tenure as head coach at Colorado State-Pueblo from 2005 to 2011. The ThunderWolves posted a 76-89 record under Eberhart, highlighted by two winning seasons, including a 17-11 showing in 2009-10. Eberhart guided Pueblo to three conference postseason appearances, including back-to-back RMAC Tournament semifinal games in 2009 and 2010.
“The opportunity to be part of something from its inception is very rare,” Eberhart said. “Getting back to coaching at the Division I level, working with a great staff and the overwhelming support of the UNO administration has made it an easy decision for me and my family to come to Omaha.”
Eberhart previously served as an assistant coach at CSU-Pueblo (then Southern Colorado) from 1997 to 2001 and was on staff with the 1998 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. He then took a post as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Colorado State (2001-05). In addition, Eberhart was previously an assistant coach at Colorado Christian University (1995-97), Machebeuf Catholic High School, Denver East High School and Adams State College.
A standout guard during his playing days at Adams State, he was a two-time All-RMAC selection. Eberhart led the Grizzlies in scoring two straight years and still holds the school record for 3-pointers in a game with nine triples.
Eberhart graduated from Adams State with his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1991. He also holds a master's degree in education curriculum instruction and design from Colorado Christian University, obtained in 1997.
