Hansen Signs Krych for 2011-12 Season

OMAHA, Neb. – Simon Krych (pronounced kritch) has signed to play for the UNO men's basketball team in 2011-12, Head Coach Derrin Hansen announced Thursday.
Krych will join the Mavericks after an outstanding career at Apollo High School in St. Cloud, Minn., where he lettered five years for Coach Dean Kesler. A 6-8, 210-pound forward, Krych averaged 14.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game to garner all-area honors from the St. Cloud Times. He led Apollo to the Section 8 AAA championship and the Central Lakes conference title en route to a berth in the Minnesota Class AAA State Tournament, marking the program's first state tournament appearance in 38 years.
“We are excited to have Simon as a part of our basketball program,” Hansen said. “He had a great senior season and took his team to the state tournament for the first time in over 30 years. Throughout his senior year, he worked to become one of the top players in the state of Minnesota. Simon is a tremendous person and player, and he will bring size and strength to the front court.”
Krych ranks in the school's top five all-time for career rebounds and blocked shots. As a senior, he helped the Eagles to an overall record of 25-5 and an 18-0 mark in conference play. Krych also played AAU ball for the Minnesota Comets under the guidance of Coach Josh Hanson.
The son of Jeff and Ann Krych, Simon was also a three-year letterwinner in track & field and was a state qualifier in the high jump.
“I knew (Assistant) Coach (Randall) Herbst from when I was recruited by the University of Mary,” Krych said. “When I heard he was joining the staff at UNO, I knew I wanted to pursue my dream of playing Division I basketball there. When I visited Omaha, I liked the campus, the coaching staff was great, and I could sense that this team is going in the right direction. I'm looking forward to joining the program this fall.”
