OMAHA, Neb. – UNO junior right-handed pitcher Joe Holtmeyer was selected in the 22nd round (No. 682 overall) of the 2011 Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox, it was announced Tuesday. Holtmeyer, a native of Omaha and a product of Creighton Prep, is the fifth Maverick drafted under Head Coach Bob Herold and the highest pick of any player during the Herold era at Nebraska Omaha.
Holtmeyer compiled a record of 8-2 and a 4.56 ERA in his junior season en route to all-region accolades from the ABCA, Daktronics and the NCBWA. He threw a team-high 71.0 innings and fanned 94 batters this year to lead the MIAA and had four complete games. With a season-high 12 strikeouts at nationally-ranked Emporia State, Holtmeyer became UNO's all-time career strikeouts leader, and he now owns 323 over three years.
In 2010, Holtmeyer earned first-team All-America accolades and was the NCAA Division II strikeout leader while also being named ABCA South Central Regional Pitcher of the Year. He went on to pitch for the Harwich Mariners in the prestigious Cape Cod League last summer.
Holtmeyer is UNO's first draft pick since 2009, when Evan Porter was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 23rd round, and Chris Kessinger went to the Seattle Mariners in the 37th round.
