Jul 15, 2011 | Hockey
OMAHA, Neb. - UNO hockey assistant coach Mike Guentzel has been named associate head coach at the University of Minnesota. Guentzel leaves Omaha after one year behind the bench for the Mavericks.
Guentzel had been an assistant at Minnesota from 1994-2008. He also had a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Colorado College (2008-09) and as the general manager and head coach at Des Moines of the United States Hockey League (2009-10) before joining the Mavs.
Last year, the Mavericks were 21-16-2 and 17-9-2 in the WCHA, good for third place, their highest-ever league finish. UNO also made its second appearance in the NCAA playoffs in school history.
Guentzel, a native of Marble, Minn., was a defenseman for the Gophers from 1981-85.
The Mavericks have begun a search for his replacement.
NOTE: UNO will release the 2011-12 schedule on Monday, July 18.
