OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Omaha hockey team will play its 15th season and its second in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association beginning with back-to-back tournaments in October. The contests are part of the 36-game schedule for the 2011-12 season released today.
“Our debut in the WCHA last year exceeded all expectations,” said Trev Alberts, UNO's Director of Athletics. “We had yet another 20-win season, finished third in the league standings and earned our second-ever berth in the NCAA playoffs.
“Dean Blais and his staff have a list of great accomplishments in their first two seasons together and with another strong recruiting class, we think they'll only add to that list in the upcoming season.”
UNO will open the season with the annual Mutual of Omaha Stampede at Qwest Center Omaha on Oct. 7 and 8. The Mavericks will host Mercyhurst in the first game and then play either Colgate or Robert Morris the following night. The next weekend, the Mavericks will head to Fairbanks, Alaska to take part in the Alaska Gold Rush tournament. UNO will play fellow WCHA team Alaska Anchorage in a non-conference game to open the tournament and then face old CCHA rival Alaska in the second game.
UNO will open WCHA play the following weekend when it hosts Alaska Anchorage on Oct. 21 and 22. The Mavs will finish out the month of October with their first-ever WCHA games at Wisconsin on Oct. 28 and 29.
In November, the Mavericks will sandwich home series with Colorado College and St. Cloud State around road weekends at Bemidji State and Denver. The St. Cloud State series will be held on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 26 and 27 with Sunday's game a matinee at 2:07 p.m.
The Mavericks start December with a non-conference battle against Alabama-Huntsville. The two-game series will be played on Dec. 2 and 3 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., home of the NHL's Nashville Predators. The Mavericks then travel to NCAA semifinalist North Dakota on Dec. 9 and 10 and return home to host a non-conference series with Quinnipiac of the ECAC on Dec. 30 and 31. The second game of the series will face off at 2:07 p.m. to eliminate conflicts with New Year's Eve celebrations.
In January, UNO dives back into WCHA action when it hosts defending national champion Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 13 and 14. The Mavericks finish the month with a series at Minnesota State on Jan. 20 and 21.
In February, UNO bookends the month with home series against Bemidji State and Minnesota. In between, they'll travel to Michigan Tech and Colorado College. The Mavericks finish the regular season at home on March 2 and 3 when they host Denver.
This season, UNO is in a scheduling pod with Colorado College and Denver, meaning the schools will play each other four times. The Mavericks also will play rivalry partner Bemidji State four times.
The Mavericks also announced that 10-Game ticket packages will go on sale on Wednesday, July 20 at 10 a.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Red Package includes all regular season Friday night home games and the game against St. Cloud State on Sunday, Nov. 27 while the Black Package includes all regular season Saturday home games. Included in each package will be the corresponding Friday or Saturday game of the first round of the WCHA Playoffs. It is the first time the Mavericks have offered playoff games as part of the 10-Game plans.
UNO is no longer offering a 10-Game Flex plan which allowed fans to purchase 10 games on either Fridays or Saturdays. Ten-Game packages are available in all lower bowl sections except sections 104-107 and sections 120-122.
