Five Mavs Named to OWH All-Nebraska Team

OMAHA, Neb. – Five UNO baseball players were honored on the Omaha World-Herald's All-Nebraska Division II Baseball Team, the newspaper announced this week. Jed Hanson, Brady Hohl, Joe Holtmeyer, Caleb Palensky and Mark Waldron were all included on the annual list.
Hohl and Holtmeyer are repeat honorees, as both players earned a spot on the team in 2010 as well. Both were also all-region selections this season and earned first-team All-MIAA nods.
Holtmeyer compiled a record of 8-2 and a 4.56 ERA in his junior season. A product of Creighton Prep, he threw a team-high 71.0 innings and fanned 94 batters this year to lead the MIAA. Holtmeyer threw four complete games and had four performances in double-figure strikeouts. With a season-high 12 strikeouts at nationally-ranked Emporia State, he became UNO's all-time career strikeouts leader, and he now has 323 over three years. Holtmeyer was taken in the 22nd round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox last month.
Hohl had an outstanding junior season of his own, batting .408 and starting all 55 games at shortstop and third base. The Millard North product led the Mavericks in hits (84) and runs scored (59) and was second in RBI (35) and third in doubles (11). Hohl also had five home runs and drew a team-best 23 walks as UNO's leadoff hitter while also stealing a team-high 15 stolen bases.
Hanson, a native of Forest Lake, Minn., started all 55 games and belted a team-leading eight home runs. He had a .337 batting average and led UNO with 48 RBI, as well as 44 runs scored, which ranked second on the squad. Hanson was 9-for-14 in stolen base attempts and also had 21 walks and 11 doubles for the year.
Palensky, a true freshman out of Papillion-LaVista South, came on strong in his inaugural campaign, hitting .366 with 14 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 35 runs scored and 36 runs driven in. He started 47 of the 50 games he appeared in and drew 19 walks. Palensky gave Nebraska Omaha its second straight MIAA Freshman of the Year honoree.
Waldron, also a product of Creighton Prep, batted .364 in his first season as a Maverick and started 37 of the 39 games her appeared in. Waldron had a team-leading three triples, as well as three doubles, 31 runs scored and 32 RBI. Additionally, he drew 18 walks and was 5-for-6 in stolen bases.
Nebraska Omaha finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 35-20 and made an appearance in the MIAA championship game.
