Fresh off of a 1-1 draw in its only exhibition match of the season at Creighton, the UNO women's soccer team travels to Green Bay, Wisc., this Friday to begin its first season of Division I play at Green Bay. The Mavericks and Phoenix will kick off at 7 p.m., at Santaga Stadium.
Scouting the Competition: Green Bay
Head Coach: Trevor Warren (4th year)

Green Bay is coming off a 2-0 loss vs. Illinois State in its only exhibition match this season on Aug. 10. The Phoenix finished 3-9-4 overall last season and 1-5-2 in the Horizon League, positioning them in eighth place in the final conference standings. The Phoenix return seven starters from last season, including leading scorer Megan Braatz (2g, 2a), and top goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (0.91 gaa), who earned second-team All-Horizon League honors. The Phoenix allowed just 15 goals through 16 games last season for a 0.94 goals against average, the top mark in the Horizon League. But their offense was unable to produce much quality, posting only nine goals all season and finishing last in the conference in goals per game (0.56). The Phoenix posted five shutouts on the year, but were also shut out 12 times, including eight straight games spanning more than a month.
The Coaches
Don Klosterman is in his 13th year as the head coach of the UNO Mavericks. The only head coach in the program's history, Klosterman has a 193-52-10 record, just seven wins from number 200 in his career at UNO. The two-time national coach of the year has led the Mavericks to the Division II national semifinal four times, culminating in the 2005 NCAA Division II national championship. Under Klosterman, the Mavericks are 19-7 all-time in NCAA Division II tournament play and have won six conference titles. Klosterman formerly served as the head men's soccer coach at Benedictine College (1979-83) and Creighton (1984-86). He graduated from Benedictine in 1974.
Trevor Warren is in his fourth year guiding the Green Bay Phoenix. Warren has compiled a 12-27-11 record in his three years at Green Bay. Warren took over the program in 2008-09 following a 2-16 year in 2007-08. Warren is a 1978 graduate of the University of Newcastle in England.
Last Time Out
The UNO women's soccer team tied Creighton 1-1 in an exhibition match last Saturday night at Morrison Stadium before 813 in attendance. Maggie Olson's 65th-minute header off of a corner kick gave the Mavs the draw against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions in a match where UNO outplayed the Bluejays in the second half. The result should give the Mavs confidence heading into their first season of Division I play this fall. Creighton, the defending Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament champions, returned its top four scorers from its 15-4-2 squad last year.
Heads-Up Play
Senior forward Maggie Olson scored the tying goal in last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Creighton in the Mavs' lone exhibition match of the season. Olson, who had scored just one goal in her Maverick career, was the beneficiary of a loose ball in the box that found its way toward her head. Sophomore midfielder Monica Bosiljevac played in a corner kick from the right side, and sophomore defender Jordyn Braun redirected the ball with her head toward the goal from the penalty spot. Olson fought off a defender to win the ball out of the air three yards from the goal, and the ball sailed over the goalie's hands and landed on the goal line and rolled in with 25:35 remaining in the game.
Tale of Two Halves
The Mavericks didn't put their best foot forward in the first half against Creighton, being outshot by the Jays 10-2 in the first half and trailing 1-0 at halftime. But the Mavs came out more composed and confident in the second half. UNO proceeded to outplay the Jays for most of the second frame, outshooting Creighton 6-2 and notching the equalizer in the 65th minute.
