Both Maverick Golf Teams Begin Play

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO men's and women's golf teams begin their first Division I seasons on Monday, Sept. 12 with two separate tournaments. It will be the first time the Mavericks have fielded a men's golf team since the late 1970s.
The women begin the season at the Lady Panther Fall Shootout hosted by Drury. Last year, the Mavericks set a school record for low 36-hole tournament score at 611. UNO returns two of the four golfers to post that score in seniors Armana Christianson and Rebecca Pollock. Pollock shot a career-best 72 in the second round of that tournament and had a career-best 36-hole score of 154. Christianson closed the same tournament with a career-best round of 74.
Christianson and Pollock will be counted on to provide leadership for the Mavericks after finishing third and fourth in stroke average last year behind departed seniors Dani Suponchick and Ricca Soper. The Mavs also look for greater contributions from sophomores Brooke Thilges and Melyssa Doerr and from junior transfer Danielle Kuchar who comes to UNO from Morningside College. True freshman Jessica Lindblad rounds out the roster.
The men's team plays for the first time since the 1979-80 season when it takes part in the Fairway Club Invitational hosted by Nebraska. The Mavericks are very young with three true freshmen and redshirt freshmen Michael Shukis and Taylor Sidzik. Both Shukis and Sidzik are local players who transfered to UNO after a year at Nebraska Kearney.
For leadership, the Mavs may turn to junior transfers Scott Beach and Mark Stovie. The two Omaha natives have two years of experience under their belts after playing at Iowa Western. Stovie qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association championship tournament in each of his two years with the Reivers.
The UNO women will play in five tournaments this fall, and the men will play in four. Each team also will host a home event. The women will welcome teams from the Northern Sun and Rocky Mountain Athletic conferences for a crossover tournament on Oct. 2-3 at Tiburon Golf Course. The men will host Concordia St. Paul on Oct. 15-16.
