NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - UNO fielded its first men's golf team in more than three decades on Monday and put itself in a tie for ninth place at the Fairway Club Invitational hosted by Nebraska.
The Mavericks shot a team score of 621 after the first two rounds, placing them in a tie with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Nebraska leads the tournament after posting a team score of 592 at the ArborLinks Golf Course. That put the Huskers nine strokes clear of second-place Missouri State. Summit League member Oral Roberts is third at 606.
The final round begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
Freshman Karl Kreiser led the Mavericks with a first round score of 73 over the par-72, 7,158-yard layout. He was strong down the stretch, playing the back nine in 34. In round two, he had a 78 and leads UNO with a total score of 151, putting him in a tie for 13th overall.
Mitch Johnson, another freshman, posted a two-round score of 155 to come in second for UNO and in a tie for 26th overall. Nebraska Kearney transfer Taylor Sidzyik finished third for the Mavs with scores of 81 and 76. His combined total of 157 is good for a tie for 31st. Alex Holtan, the Minnesota native who is UNO's only non-Nebraskan on the roster, shot 160 over the first two rounds to place fourth for the Mavs. Michael Shukis was fifth for UNO at 165.
Missouri State's Daily Young had a two-shot lead Nebraska's Manuel Lavin for the overall lead after posting rounds of 67-74-141, three under par.
UNO last had a golf team during the 1979-80 season and added the sport this year as part of its reclassification to Division I.
