Shukis Wins UNK Invite; Mavs Take Third

AXTELL, Neb. - Michael Shukis became the first UNO men's golfer in the modern era to win an event, and the Mavericks took third place at the Nebraska Kearney Invite on Tuesday at Awarii Dunes golf course.
Shukis shot a 73 in the final round on Tuesday and finished the tournament at 219, three over par, to earn the individual medalist honors. He edged out UNK's Kris Koezler who was second overall at 220. Shukis is a transfer from Kearney where he redshirted last year.
The Mavericks moved up a spot from the second round to finish in third with a team score of 919. UNK won its home event with a score of 889. Nebraska Wesleyan was second at 915.
Mitch Johnson was second in scoring for UNO after an 80 on Tuesday. He finished with a score of 231 to come in 12th overall. Taylor Sidzyik was third for UNO and tied for 13th overall after carding a 76 in round three. He and Shukis both posted scores in the 70s for all three rounds.
Alex Holtan closed with an 81 on Tuesday to finish fourth for UNO with a score of 239. Karl Krieser shot 80 in round three and had a score of 244 for the tournament.
The Mavericks will host their first tournament when they welcome Concordia St. Paul on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16.
