Mavericks To Skate in 2012 Ice Breaker

KANSAS CITY, MO. - The Kansas City Sports Commission in collaboration with College Hockey Inc., announced on Tuesday that Kansas City will host the 2012 Ice Breaker College Hockey Tournament at Sprint Center.
Taking place October 12-13, 2012, the 16th Annual Ice Breaker Tournament will host UNO, Army, Notre Dame and the University of Maine. All four teams have made previous appearances in the Ice Breaker Tournament with the 2012 event marking Maine's fourth appearance, Notre Dame's third appearance and UNO and Army's second appearance each. The Mavericks hosted the Ice Breaker in 2009.
Three of the four teams were ranked in the U.S. College Hockey Online Top 20 poll at the end of the 2010-11 season. Last season a total of 19 alumni from the four schools played in the NHL.
“The competition for next year's Ice Breaker Tournament will be top notch," said UNO head coach Dean Blais. "We're hoping that, because Kansas City is so close to Omaha, many of our fans will make the trip to see a great weekend of college hockey in an NHL caliber arena.”
Notable forces in college hockey, Notre Dame finished the 2010-2011 season 25-14-5 and reached the semifinals in the NCAA Frozen Four. UNO ended its season 21-16-2 and made an NCAA tournament appearance.
College Hockey Inc. Executive Director Paul Kelly stated, “Kansas City will be an excellent site for the Ice Breaker Tournament to start the 2012-13 college hockey season. We have been very impressed with the first-class facility at the Sprint Center, the beautiful city and the commitment of the community to make this event a success. It will be a memorable experience for both the student-athletes and the fans.”
