The UNO women's basketball team (10-8) hits the road on Sunday for its first-ever meeting against Sioux Falls (10-1) at the Stewart Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m, and links to live stats and a Sioux Falls audio broadcast and webcast will be available on OMavs.com. Like UNO, Sioux Falls is in the middle of a transition. The Cougars are in their third and final year of transitioning from NAIA to Division II, pending approval from the NCAA at the end of the 2011-12 academic year. The Cougars are not playing a conference schedule this year and cannot compete in postseason play.
Series History
Sunday's meeting will be the first ever between the two schools. UNO will also be the first-ever Division I team to play at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls.
Last Time Out
Kansas City, Mo. - The UNO women's basketball team rallied late but came up short at UMKC on Wednesday night, falling 74-64 at Swinney Recreation Center.
The Mavs (10-8) cut a 15-point deficit down to five in the closing minutes, but the Kangaroos held on for the win to improve to 12-5 overall. UMKC stands at 3-2 in the Summit League, which UNO will become a full-fledged member of next season.
Jamie Nash had a game-high 19 points, while Amanda Woodring had 11 and Cathleen Cox had 10.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education. Lindley is assisted by Jason Flores, in his eighth year at UNO, and first-year UNO coaches Shanele Stires and Elena Lovato.
Travis Traphagen is in his fourth year as the head coach at Sioux Falls. Traphagen has a 73-44 record at the school and in his career. A graduate of Black Hills State, Traphagen is assisted by Chelsea DeVille and Tom Goehle.
Scouting the Opponents
Sioux Falls was an NAIA national quarterfinalist last year and returned four starters this season. The Cougars are 10-1 and have won eight straight. Vanessa Johnson leads the team with 14.4 points per game. Laura Johnson averages 10.5 points and 5.7 rebounds, while Jamey Hofer averages 9.5 points and 5.8 rebounds. The Cougars have played just two home games, both of which they won. Sioux Falls likes to shoot the long ball, hitting 8.8 three-point field goals per game. 37.8 percent of their points per game comes from behind the arc.
Maverick Roundup
1) Paige Frauendorfer leads UNO with 12.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Frauendorfer has a team-high seven double-doubles this year and has set career highs in points (24) and rebounds (15).
2) Jamie Nash is close behind Frauendorfer at 12.2 points per game. Nash also averages 6.5 assists per game and 4.6 steals per game, which ranks second in the nation.
3) The Mavericks are 9-1 this year when outrebounding their opponent, and UNO has won the battle on the boards in seven of eight home games so far this season. UNO is 1-7 when not outrebounding its opponent.
4) The Mavericks are 10-1 this year when winning the battle in the paint and are 0-7 when not outscoring their opponents in the lane. During a four-game winning streak in early December, the Mavericks dominated play in the paint, posting a combined 156-46 advantage for an average of 39.0-10.6 per game.
5) Sixty has been the magic number so far for the Mavericks. When holding opponents under 60 points, the Mavericks are 8-1. And when scoring more than 60 points, the Mavericks are 10-2.
6) UNO has fallen in all eight games that its trailed with five minutes to play. But UNO has played well with a lead this season. The Mavericks are 8-0 when leading at halftime and are 10-0 when tied or leading with five minutes left in regulation.

Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl ranks fourth in school history with 145 career 3-point field goals. She needs just 11 more to move into sole possession of third place. Pohl also moved into the top 10 in school history for career offensive rebounds at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 18. Pohl now has 153 career offensive boards to rank sixth all-time.
Meanwhile, Nash ranks tied for third in school history with 243 career steals. She needs one more to take sole possession of third place and 22 to move into second place. The school record is 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81. Nash also entered the top 10 this season in career assists with 321, which ranks her seventh.
Nash Steals Way Into National Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics during its first year in Division I. However, with 4.6 steals per game, Jamie Nash would rank second in Division I in that category. Quinnipiac's Felicia Barron leads the nation with 5.4 steals per game. The Mavs as a team average 12.1 steals per game, which would rank tied for 26th in the country.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is still young, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 60.3 points per game, which is 11 points better than last year's 71.3 average. UNO is also holding opponents to 27.5 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Liepa Sees Increased Time
Zenta Liepa is finding her way into the UNO lineup once again. After starting the first two games this year, Liepa came off the bench for 13 straight games. But the junior college transfer started the last two games against Dallas Christian and UMKC, averaging 7.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in 23.0 minutes per game. Liepa had a career-high three assists on Wednesday at UMKC.
Woodring Dials Up From Distance
Amanda Woodring continues to provide offense off the bench. After hitting just 2-of-8 (.250) from long distance through her first seven games this season, Woodring is 21-of-40 (.525) in her last nine games. Woodring hit a school-record eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 24 points against College of St. Mary on Dec. 7. Woodring is up to 4.9 points per game, but her pro-rated average of 15.9 points per 40 minutes is the best on the team.
Freshman Cox Makes Early Impact
Freshman Cathleen Cox came off the bench and scored a career-high 23 points in a 64-62 win over Missouri Western on Saturday, Dec. 31. Cox went 10-of-17 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Cox is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.4 points per game.
A Quad of Double-Doubles
An incredible four Mavericks recorded double-doubles in a 72-70 overtime win over Northwest Missouri State on Dec. 10. Jamie Nash had a game-high 21 points and 11 assists; Paige Frauendorfer had 18 points and 14 rebounds; Heather Pohl had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Rese Huddlin had 11 points and 13 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
