Mavericks Fall to Concordia, 68-60

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's basketball team fell to NAIA Division II No. 5 Concordia, 68-60, on Thursday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Bulldogs (18-2, 10-2 GPAC) used a 19-0 run in the first half to jump out to a 34-17 lead, and the Mavericks (11-9) rallied to tie the game in the second half, but could never get over the hump against the Bulldogs and their high-pressure defense. The loss was just the second for the Mavs on their home floor this season.
Paige Frauendorfer had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Jamie Nash had 14 points, and Stacia Gebers had 11. But the Mavericks committed 29 turnovers - their second-highest total this season - and hit just 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from the 3-point line and 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from the free throw line.
Concordia's constant full-court press got to the Mavericks in the first half, forcing 18 Maverick turnovers. As a result, the Bulldogs raced to a 34-17 lead after a 19-0 run. The Mavs were held scoreless from the 12:02 mark until 4:54 remained in the first half. During that 7:08 stretch, the Mavs attempted only five field goals, as they turned it over nine times.
But UNO closed the gap down the stretch of the first half, going on a 12-0 run to make it 34-29 with 2:22 left. Nash and Frauendorfer combined for 10 of the Mavs' 12 points during the run, which included six free throws. After trailing 37-31 at halftime, UNO opened the second half with a jumper by Frauendorfer and two layups by Nash to tie the game at 37-37 and cap a 20-3 run to get back into the game.
But Concordia wouldn't let UNO get back in front, pushing the lead back to 47-39 with 13:47 to play on a 3-pointer by Kristen Conahan. UNO then went on a 6-0 spurt - all free throws - to get back within 47-45 with 11:54 left, but Conahan hit another 3-pointer to go back up by five with 8:53 remaining. After two Bulldog free throws, Frauendorfer and Cox made back-to-back buckets to cut it to 52-49 with 7:44 to play. But the Mavs couldn't score on their next four possessions, and Concordia notched another 3-pointer and two free throws to go up 57-49 with 5:01 left.
Conahan drained another 3-pointer with 3:37 left to give Concordia a double-digit lead again, 62-51. After a Gebers free throw, Concordia's Amber Kistler scored a layup off of another UNO turnover to go up 64-52. Heather Pohl hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to bring UNO within 66-60, but the Bulldogs hit two free throws to ice the game.
Bailey Morris came off the bench for Concordia to lead all scorers with 16 points. The Omaha native Conahan finished with 15.
UNO outscored Concordia in the paint, 26-22, but the Bulldogs hit 9-of-23 (39.1 percent) from beyond the arc to more than make up the difference. Concordia came into the game leading NAIA Division II in turnover margin at plus 9.9 per game, and it committed just 16 to the Mavs' 29 - the most since 42 at Kentucky on Nov. 23.
The Mavs shot well from the field - 45.7 percent on 21-of-46 - but attempted 15 fewer field goals than Concordia, which finished 22-of-61 (36.1 percent).
UNO is back on the road next week, traveling to Texas-Arlington for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
