Mavs Spend Break in Community Service
Jan 6, 2012 | General, Hockey
OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO hockey team spent some of its time during the semester break taking part in several community service activities.
The Mavericks made their annual visit to Children's Hospital to participate with patients in their Winter Carnival. The entire team spent the morning playing games with ambulatory patients and visiting those patients who could not leave their beds.
Since the hockey team first came into existence 15 years ago, the Mavericks have worked to raise the spirits of patients at Children's. The visits are arranged by the Blue Line Club.
The Mavericks also assisted the Salvation Army, delivering gifts to those in need.
The hockey team is one of many UNO teams in and out of season who spent the holiday season working to help those in greater Omaha through community service. Several teams made hospital visits, and the women's soccer team conducted a coat drive for those who could not afford winter coats.
Community is one of the five guiding principles of UNO Athletics. UNO athletics will be engaged in the community and support partnerships that promote service, learning and outreach.
