The Mavs are coming off a 63-51 loss against Cornell at home on Saturday, UNO's first home game against a Division I team since 1988 and the first since the Mavericks transitioned to Division I this season. The Lady Crusaders are a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association Division II.
Series History
Monday's game will be the first meeting between the two schools.
Last Time Out
OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's basketball team dropped its first home game against a Division I opponent this year, as Cornell shot past the Mavericks, 63-51, before 331 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Big Red hit 12 three-pointers, the most by a UNO opponent this year, and the Mavs struggled to keep up from behind the arc, hitting just 3-of-17 from long distance. Taylor Flynn scored 21 points off the bench - 18 in the first half - and hit 5-of-8 from long range to lead the Big Red (5-7). Jamie Nash led the Mavericks (9-7) with 13 points, and Stacia Gebers had 12.
Despite trailing by as many as 14 in the first half, UNO rallied to cut the lead down to five with 14:26 left in the game, 40-35, after a 7-0 run. But Cornell cut the Mavs' momentum short, as Allyson DiMagno and Flynn hit back-to-back treys for a 46-35 lead. After Amanda Woodring answered with her second 3-pointer of the half to make it 46-38, Stephanie Long hit a 3 on Cornell's next possession, sparking a 9-0 run that gave the Big Red a 55-38 lead with 8:28 to play and effectively put the game away.
The Big Red shot 43.9 percent from the field (25-of-57), while UNO hit 35.0 percent (21-of-60). The Mavs outscored Cornell in the paint, 28-14. UNO entered the game with a 9-0 record when outscoring their opponents in the paint, but Cornell's hot shooting from deep offset the Mavs' advantage.
Paige Frauendorfer, UNO's leading scorer, was held scoreless for the first time this season, but she contributed 10 rebounds and five steals. Pohl finished with nine points.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education.
Sean O'Connor is in his second year as the head coach at Dallas Christian. O'Connor led the Lady Crusaders to a 4-27 record in his first year in 2010-11.
Maverick Roundup
1) Paige Frauendorfer is UNO's top scorer, averaging 13.5 points on 46.3-percent shooting from the field. The junior guard leads the Mavericks with seven double-doubles and has already set new career highs in both points (24) and rebounds (15) this season. Frauendorfer has scored in double-figures in 13 of 16 games.
2) Jamie Nash now has 239 career steals, which ranks her fourth in school history. She needs five more to take sole possession of third place and 26 to move into second place. Nash is averaging 4.9 steals per game, which ranks second in the nation.
3) Heather Pohl has made 143 career 3-pointers, which ranks her fourth in school history. The senior needs just 13 more to move into sole possession of third place.
4) Freshman Cathleen Cox came off the bench and scored a career-high 23 points in a 64-62 win over Missouri Western on Saturday, Dec. 31. Cox went 10-of-17 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
5) Amanda Woodring hit a school-record eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 24 points against College of St. Mary on Dec. 7.
6) An incredible four Mavericks recorded double-doubles in a 72-70 overtime win over Northwest Missouri State on Dec. 10. Jamie Nash had a game-high 21 points and 11 assists; Paige Frauendorfer had 18 points and 14 rebounds; Heather Pohl had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Rese Huddlin had 11 points and 13 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.
Paint Producing Results
The Mavericks are 9-1 this year when winning the battle in the paint and are 0-6 when not outscoring their opponents in the lane. During a four-game winning streak in early December, the Mavericks dominated play in the paint, posting a combined 156-46 advantage for an average of 39.0-10.6 per game.
Battling on the Boards
The Mavericks are 8-0 this year when outrebounding their opponent, and UNO has won the battle on the boards in six of seven home games so far this season. UNO is 1-7 when not outrebounding its opponent.
Scanning the National Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics during its first year in Division I. However, with 4.9 steals per game, Jamie Nash would rank second in Division I in that category. Quinnipiac's Felicia Barron leads the nation with 5.4 steals per game. The Mavs as a team average 12.6 steals per game, which would rank tied for 18th in the country.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is still young, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 61.1 points per game, which is more than 10 points better than last year's 71.3 average. UNO is also holding opponents to 28.0 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Winning Numbers
Sixty has been the magic number so far for the Mavericks. When holding opponents under 60 points, the Mavericks are 7-1. And when scoring more than 60 points, the Mavericks are 9-1. UNO has fallen in all seven games that its trailed with five minutes to play. But UNO has played well with a lead this season. The Mavericks are 7-0 when leading at halftime and are 9-0 when tied or leading with five minutes left in regulation.
Record Seekers
Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl ranks fourth in school history with 143 career 3-point field goals. She needs just 13 more to move into sole possession of third place. Pohl also moved into the top 10 in school history for career offensive rebounds at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 18. Pohl now has 149 career offensive boards to rank seventh all-time.
Meanwhile, Nash ranks fourth in school history with 239 career steals. She needs five more to take sole possession of third place and 26 to move into second place. The school record is 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81. Nash also entered the top 10 this season in career assists with 309, which ranks her seventh.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
