OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's basketball team cruised past Dallas Christian on Monday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse, 84-33.
The Mavericks (10-7) snapped their first two-game losing skid of the season in style, jumping out to a 33-7 lead in the first 12 minutes after connecting on 12 straight field goals midway through the half. And the Mavs never looked back from there while limiting Dallas Christian (4-11) to a season-low point total for a UNO opponent. The Mavs' 51-point margin of victory was the most since a 59-point win at Chaminade on Dec. 31, 2007.
Amanda Woodring led the Mavericks with 15 points on 5-of-8 from 3-point range, while Stacia Gebers chipped in 14 points and five rebounds.
All 10 Mavericks who played in the game had a field goal, and nine players had six or more points as the Mavericks shot a season-high 51.6 percent (33-of-64). Defensively, UNO held the undermanned Lady Crusaders - with no substitutes available to play - to 20.8 percent (10-of-48) from the field, another season-best effort for the Mavericks.
Leading 6-5 with 16:23 left in the first half, the Mavs went on a 17-0 run spanning 5:01 to take control of the game with a 23-5 lead. UNO went into the locker room with a 45-16 lead at halftime.
Dallas Christian caught fire briefly out of the gate in the second half, outscoring UNO 7-4 in the opening 1:22 to make it 49-23. But the Mavericks gathered themselves and outscored Dallas Christian 35-10 the rest of the way. After DCC's spurt to start the half, UNO reeled off the next 10 points to make it 59-23 with 13:52 to play, capped by a 3-pointer by Jessica Zaruba.
UNO outrebounded Dallas Christian, 56-17, and controlled the paint all night, outscoring the Lady Crusaders 32-6. The Mavericks matched their season high of 26 assists, with nine different Mavericks recording at least one assist.
Woodring and Gebers were the only Mavs in double figures, but Cathleen Cox, Paige Frauendorfer, Taijhe Kelly and Zenta Liepa all had eight points. Jamie Nash and Heather Pohl each had seven, with Pohl grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Rese Huddlin had six points and five boards, while Zaruba finished with three points and a season-high matching seven rebounds.
The Mavericks will now travel to UMKC on Wednesday night in search of their second road win over a Summit League foe this season. UNO knocked off Western Illinois 65-58 on Dec. 20.
