Blais Announces Captains For New Season

OMAHA, Neb. –University of Nebraska Omaha head hockey coach Dean Blais announced today that senior forward Brent Gwidt will serve as captain of the 2012-13 team, and junior forward Matt White and senior goaltender John Faulkner will be alternate captains.
“All three players have experience as captains for our team last year, and they are natural choices by their fellow players to again lead our team,” said Blais. “We expect our captains to set good examples for their teammates both on the ice and off, and these three players have the ability to do that.”
Last season as an alternate captain, Gwidt had a career year, scoring six goals and nine assists for 15 points while appearing in all 38 games. The native of Minocqua, Wis. more than doubled his career goal, assist and point totals.
White also had a career year in 2011-12, leading the team in scoring with 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points. The native of Whittier, Calif. became the first Maverick to score 40 or more points since the 2007-08 season. He also tied for the lead in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with four shorthanded goals.
Faulkner appeared in 18 games last year, posting a record of 5-9-2 with a 2.93 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage. The native of Sarnia, Ont. ranks in the top five in several UNO career goaltending categories including saves (3rd/1,946), save percentage (T-3rd/.903), wins (3rd/38), goals-against average (2nd/2.65), shutouts (2nd/6)games played (3rd/86) and minutes played (3rd/4,738:29).
The Mavericks will open the season next week with three games. They'll host Lethbridge in an exhibition game on Monday, Oct. 8 at 7:07 p.m. Later in the week, they'll travel to Kansas City, Mo. for the Icebreaker Tournament on Oct. 12 and 13. They'll play Army on Friday at 9 p.m. and then take on either Maine or Notre Dame the following day.
