MANHATTAN, Kan. - Five Omaha men's golfers are tied for sixth after the first two rounds of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at Kansas State. Four others finished in seventh after the final round of the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational hosted by South Dakota State.
The team split its squad to play in overlapping tournaments in a three-day stretch.
At Kansas State, Alex Overfelt shot rounds of 75 and 80 to lead the Mavericks after the first 36 holes. The Mavericks are tied with Southern Illinois at 647. The host Wildcats lead with a score of 609, three strokes ahead of Idaho. Missouri State is in third at 637.
In addition to leading the Mavericks, Overfelt is tied for eighth in the field of 55 golfers. Taylor Sidzyik is second for the Mavericks after going 77-82 to tie for 15th at 159. Mitch Johnson shot rounds of 80 and 84 for a 36-hole score of 164 and is third for UNO and in a tie for 26th overall.
Karl Krieser was fourth for UNO with a score of 172, putting him a tie for 48th. Mike Muller was fifth and 51st overall just one shot back.
The final round is tomorrow at 8:30 at the Colbert Hills Golf Course.
At Sioux City, S.D., the Mavericks moved up one place in the final round to take seventh in the eight-team Jackrabbit Fall Invitational. Freshman Mitch Ryan and sophomore Michael Shukis both shot 77 in the final round to pace the Mavs. Ryan finished with a three-round total of 229 to lead the Mavs in scoring and finish in a tie for 18th. Shukis and Reid Weibe were three strokes back at 232 to tie for 27th. Weibe shot 78 on Monday at the Minnehaha Country Club. Alex Holtan had 82 in the final round to finish at 243, good for a tie for 40th.
North Dakota State won with a score of 877, beating out South Dakota State which posted a score of 885. Northern Iowa was third at 888.
