Shires Announces 2013 Recruiting Class

OMAHA, Neb. – Three student-athletes – Elise Brown, Nicki Carson and Kristy Wieser – will join the Omaha volleyball program in 2013, head coach Rose Shires announced Friday.
ELISE BROWN
OH – 6-1 – Des Moines, Iowa (Dowling High School)
A three-year letterwinner, Brown played for Coach Mary Beth Wiskus at Dowling High School, where she was part of the first team to qualify for the state tournament in school history. Brown earned two first-team all-conference awards and was a first-team all-division pick as a senior. She was named to the 2011 Iowa Girls' Coaches Association Special Mention All-State Team and was twice voted Dowling's most valuable player.
A member of the National Honor Society and the Presidential Honor Roll, Brown also served on the National Council on Youth Leadership. She was an all-state all-academic pick as a senior.
Brown played club ball for Central Iowa Select.
“Elise is a six-rotation outside hitter who will bring much-needed height for us on the pins,” Shires said. “She is extremely competitive and has a great understanding of what it will take to develop the UNO program into a competitive Division I team.”
NICKI CARSON
RS/S/OH – 6-0 – Ord, Neb. (Ord High School)
Carson was a two-time all-state selection and a three-time Lou Platte all-conference honoree at Ord High School. As a senior, she finished with 270 kills and a .442 hitting percentage. Carson also averaged 4.3 set assists per set and had 59 blocks and 28 service aces, helping Ord to a 25-7 season record. In 2011, she led Ord to an appearance in the Class C-2 state championship game.
Carson is also a three-year state track & field qualifier and played club volleyball for the Nebraska Juniors. She earned academic all-state accolades for both track and basketball in 2012.
“Nicki is an unbelievable three-sport athlete who can play any position on the court,” Shires said. “We will look for her to immediate impact the program as a pin hitter with her high and aggressive play above the net.”
KRISTY WIESER
MH – 6-2 – Lincoln, Neb. (Pius X High School)
Wieser, an all-state middle hitter, comes from Lincoln Pius X High School, where she helped the Thunderbolts to the Class B state championship in 2011. That same season, she earned all-state honorable mention status and followed up with all-state honors as a senior. This year, Wieser helped Pius to a Class A state tournament appearance, and she has been an academic all-state selection for both volleyball and tennis.
Wieser played club ball for the Nebraska Juniors.
“Kristy has big blocking ability and is a dynamic attacker who will push UNO to become a championship program,” Shires said. “She knows how to build a program and has what it takes to go to the next level, as she was an integral leader at Pius X when they became a Class A school and qualified for the state tournament. Kristy is the type of game-changing middle that will help propel us to the upper level of the Summit League.”
