Mavericks Step Up in Hockey Polls

USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha hockey team reached its highest ranking of the season in the weekly college hockey polls released today.
The Mavericks were ranked 12th in the latest poll from the website USCHO.com, up one spot from last week. The Mavs also gained one spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, moving up to 13th. It's their highest ranking in either poll this season.
The top six teams in each poll are identical and are unchanged from last week. Boston College is top ranked for the second straight week followed by New Hampshire, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Miami and Boston University.
In addition to UNO and Minnesota, North Dakota (7), Denver (14), St. Cloud State (16) and Minnesota State (18) are the other WCHA teams that appear in the USCHO.com ranking of top 20 teams. The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, which ranks the top 15, also includes WCHA teams North Dakota (8), and Denver (15).
UNO has now been ranked in both polls simultaneously for the fifth straight week.
The Mavericks went into the Christmas break off a split with visiting Minnesota State. UNO lost 6-3 in the opener on Friday before rebounding with a 5-1 win on Saturday to retain the "Spirit of the Maverick" Trophy based on total goals in the series. UNO is 11-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the WCHA, putting it in a tie with Minnesota for fifth place.
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29-30 at Quinnipiac of ECAC Hockey. Each game starts at noon ET.
