PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Jamie Nash hit the go-ahead basket with 36 seconds left, and the Omaha women's basketball team rebounded from a slow start to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 67-63, Monday night at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
The Mavericks (7-2) fell behind 14-4 in the opening 8:06 of their first road game of the season and trailed by as many as 11 in the first half before entering the halftime break down 35-26. But behind 66.7-percent shooting in the second half, the Mavs rallied for the four-point win over the Lady Lions (2-6).
Paige Frauendorfer led the way with 18 points on 8-of-15 from the floor and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Ericka House had 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting (3-of-7 from 3-point land) in her return to her home state. Carolyn Blair-Mobley added 11 points. Nash had eight points and a career-high 12 assists, and Taijhe Kelly had a team-high eight rebounds to go with six points for the Mavs.
The Mavericks shot 53.8 percent (28-of-52) from the field for the game and outscored Arkansas-Pine Bluff 41-28 after halftime. After trailing by nine at halftime, UNO opened the second half with a 6-2 spurt to cut the score to 37-32 with 17:45 left. Frauendorfer scored five of the six points.
Casse Vaughn, also an Arkansas native, tied the game at 42-42 with 12:55 remaining, and after a Lady Lion bucket, Frauendorfer knocked down a triple for a 45-44 lead with 11:05 left, the Mavs' first lead since it was 2-0 early on. The Mavs built a 54-46 lead with 7:13 left on a layup by Nash, capping a 28-11 run in the first 12:47 of the second half.
But the Lady Lions wouldn't go away on their home court. UAPB battled back to take a 61-60 lead on a Wright Cassidy 3-pointer with 3:06 left. Nash then scored and was fouled and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to regain a two-point UNO lead, but Chigoziany Okwumbua tied the game at 63-63 with 1:09 left.
But Nash scored the decisive bucket with 36 seconds left for a 65-63 UNO lead. Blair-Mobley fouled UAPB's Jenise Gentry on the other end, but Gentry missed the front end of a one-and-one and Frauendorfer grabbed the rebound and fed Kelly at the other end for a layup and a 67-63 lead with 20 seconds to play. The Lady Lions turned the ball over on their final possession.
The Mavericks return home to host College of St. Mary on Friday at Noon at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
