Mavs Host Sioux Falls on Pink Night

Game Notes
The UNO Maverick women's basketball team hosts Sioux Falls on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse. Thursday's game is “Pink Night” for UNO, as the Mavericks will support breast cancer research and awareness. Fans are asked to wear pink to the game, and pink Maverick t-shirts will be on sale at the game for $10 with half the proceeds going to Methodist Hospital cancer research. Three UNO jerseys will be raffled off during the game and will be awarded to fans at the end of the game. Players will sign autographs after the game.
Series History
UNO and Sioux Falls met once for the first time ever earlier this season on Jan. 15, with the Mavericks pulling out a 74-61 win in Sioux Falls. Heather Pohl scored 18 points to lead four Mavs in double figures, as UNO snapped Sioux Falls' eight-game winning streak. Trailing 52-51 with 8:48 left in the game, UNO outscored the Cougars the rest of the way 23-9.
Last Time Out
OMAHA, Neb. - A furious come-from-behind effort late in the second half wasn't enough for the UNO women's basketball team, as it dropped a 70-59 contest to Western Illinois on Monday before 431 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks trailed by as many as 21 in the second half but rallied to within six with just under five minutes left. Heather Pohl had a season-high 23 points and added 10 rebounds, while Paige Frauendorfer had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education. Lindley is assisted by Jason Flores, in his eighth year at UNO, and first-year UNO coaches Shanele Stires and Elena Lovato.
Travis Traphagen is in his fourth year as the head coach at Sioux Falls. Traphagen has a 78-36 record at Sioux Falls and overall. Traphagen is assisted by Chelsea DeVille and Tom Goehle.
Scouting the Opponents
Sioux Falls was an NAIA national quarterfinalist last year and returned four starters this season. The Cougars are 15-2 and have won eight straight road games and five in a row overall. Vanessa Johnson leads the team with 13.2 points per game. Jamey Hofer averages 10.1 points and 5.8 rebounds, while Laura Johnson averages 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds. Sioux Falls likes to shoot the long ball, hitting 8.8 three-point field goals per game.

Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl ranks third in school history with 157 career 3-point field goals made. She needs just 12 more to move into sole possession of second place. Pohl also moved into the top 10 in school history for career offensive rebounds at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 18. Pohl now has 165 career offensive boards to rank sixth all-time. She needs three more to break into the top five.
Meanwhile, Nash ranks third in school history with 258 career steals. She needs six more to move into second place. The school record is 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81. Nash also entered the top 10 this season in career assists with 345, which is tied for fifth.
Nash Steals Way Into National Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics during its first year in Division I. However, with 4.4 steals per game, Jamie Nash would rank second in Division I in that category. Quinnipiac's Felicia Barron leads the nation with 4.7 steals per game. The Mavs as a team average 11.5 steals per game, which would tie for 31st in the country.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is still young, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 60.7 points per game, which is nearly 11 points better than last year's 71.3 average. UNO is also holding opponents to 28.5 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Pohl Shoots Into Top Three
Senior Heather Pohl hit 6-of-10 from 3-point range on Monday against Western Illinois to surpass Tricia Floyd (1988-92) for third place on the all-time 3-pointers made chart with 157 career treys. Pohl, who finished with a season-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, needs 12 more to pass Karen Thies (2004-07) for second place.
Kelly Throws a Block Party
Freshman center Taijhe Kelly tied her career high with four blocked shots against Western Illinois on Monday. Kelly also added four points and five rebounds in 21 minutes, her second-highest total of the season. Her highest, 23 minutes, came one game earlier at Texas-Arlington, where she had four points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Kelly has 33 blocks in her first year at UNO, which puts her only 20 blocks shy of cracking the top 10 in school history for a career total. Her career average of 1.6 blocks per game ranks second in school history.
Freshman Cox Makes Early Impact
Freshman Cathleen Cox came off the bench and scored a career-high 23 points in a 64-62 win over Missouri Western on Saturday, Dec. 31. Cox went 10-of-17 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Cox is fifth on the team in scoring at 6.7 points per game.
A Quad of Double Doubles
An incredible four Mavericks recorded double-doubles in a 72-70 overtime win over Northwest Missouri State on Dec. 10. Jamie Nash had a game-high 21 points and 11 assists; Paige Frauendorfer had 18 points and 14 rebounds; Heather Pohl had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Rese Huddlin had 11 points and 13 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
