OMAHA, Neb. - Heather Pohl had a double-double - 17 points and 10 rebounds - on her Senior Night, and Jamie Nash added a career-high 25 points, as the UNO women's basketball team rolled past Dakota Wesleyan on Friday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse, 68-54.
The win improved the Mavs to 14-11 and assured them of their first winning record since 2008-09. The Mavs completed the home portion of their schedule with a 9-3 record at the Sapp Fieldhouse. Dakota Wesleyan, an NAIA Division II school, dropped to 15-13 on the season.
The Mavs trailed early but used a 23-4 spurt spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to take a 52-38 lead with 10:37 left. But the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to make things interesting, pulling within 54-48 with 7:52 left. Pohl, who was honored before the game as the Mavs' lone senior, buried a huge 3-pointer to put UNO back up 57-48, and Nash added one of her own to make it 60-48 with 5:31 left.
After Dakota Wesleyan scored four straight to cut it to 60-52, Pohl again hit a triple to extend the lead back to 11 with 3:16 left. Pohl's shot effectively put the game away, as Dakota Wesleyan scored just one basket the rest of the way.
Pohl, a Millard West grad, had recorded her fourth double-double of the season by the 13:31 mark of the second half. She also matched her career high of four assists while playing her last game at the Sapp Fieldhouse. Pohl finished 4-of-7 from 3-point range to climb within three of second place in school history with 165 career 3-pointers made.
Nash finished 9-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3-point land. She also had three steals, five assists and just two turnovers. Stacia Gebers grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to go with six points. Paige Frauendorfer chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds. The Mavs finished with a 49-28 edge on the glass.
UNO had to overcome hot shooting from the Tigers behind the arc in the first half. The Mavs fell behind 14-7 at the 13:44 mark but went on an 8-0 run over the next 4:28 to take their first lead of the game on a Gebers layup. It didn't last long, as Dakota Wesleyan answered with a 3-pointer at the opposite end 12 seconds later to retake the lead. Nash sank a 3-pointer with 6:37 left to put UNO up 22-20 with 6:37 left, then broke another tie with a 3-pointer to make it 25-22.
UNO used a decisive 12-0 run spanning the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half to take a 41-34 lead. Dakota Wesleyan's Amanda Hart hit a 3-pointer at 15:20 to snap its 7:24 scoring drought spanning both halves, but Frauendorfer answered with a six-footer, and Nash scored in transition. Then following a Tiger free throw, Pohl knocked down her second 3-pointer of the game and found a cutting Gebers for a layup and a 50-38 UNO lead with 11:50 remaining.
While the Mavs gained a comfortable lead in the second half thanks to a balanced effort, Nash was the key to the Mavericks taking a two-point lead in the first half. The junior point guard had 17 points in the first half to offset the shooting woes of the rest of the team. Nash went 6-for-9 in the half, while the rest of the team went 6-for-21 from the floor. Meanwhile, the Tigers started the game 6-for-11 from long range before cooling off down the stretch, hitting 3-of-10 to close the first half.
Hart led Dakota Wesleyan with 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting, every attempt coming from 3-point range.
The Mavs don't return to the court again until next weekend, when they hit the road for their final two games of the season. UNO is at New Orleans on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 12 p.m., then the Mavs end the season on Monday, Feb. 20 at Louisiana-Lafayette at 2 p.m.
