The UNO Maverick women's basketball team will wrap up its first Division I season with a pair of games in Louisiana over the weekend. The Mavs play at winless New Orleans at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The Privateers are 0-23 and are transitioning from Division I to Division II. On Monday, UNO closes the season at Louisiana-Lafayette at 2 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns are 5-21 and 0-14 in the Sun Belt Conference entering the weekend. Last Time Out
OMAHA, Neb. - Heather Pohl had a double-double - 17 points and 10 rebounds - on her Senior Night, and Jamie Nash added a career-high 25 points, as the UNO women's basketball team rolled past Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, Feb. 10, at the Sapp Fieldhouse, 68-54. The win improved the Mavs to 14-11 and assured them of their first winning record since 2008-09. The Mavs completed the home portion of their schedule with a 9-3 record at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavs trailed early but used a 23-4 spurt spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to take a 52-38 lead with 10:37 left.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education. Lindley is assisted by Jason Flores, in his eighth year at UNO, and first-year UNO coaches Shanele Stires and Elena Lovato.
Keeshawn Carter is in her first year as the interim head coach at New Orleans. Carter has an 0-23 overall record and is a graduate of New Orleans. Errol Rogers is in his fifth year as the head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette and has a 36-111 overall record. He is a 1995 graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Scouting the Opponents
New Orleans is 0-23 in its transition from Division I to Division II. The Privateers are led by Mirjam Sipos, who averages 12.9 points per game. Keri Thomas chips in 10.8 points per game. Louisiana is 5-21 overall and 0-14 in the Sun Belt. The Ragin' Cajuns are led by Krystal Motley's 13.0 points per game. Louisiana has lost 16 straight games after starting 5-5.
Maverick Roundup
• With 10 points at South Dakota on Feb. 7, Heather Pohl eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in her Maverick career. Pohl became the 23rd player in UNO history to reach 1,000 points.
• Jamie Nash averages 12.9 points per game to lead the Mavericks. Nash also averages 6.1 assists per game and 4.3 steals per game, which ranks second in the nation.
• The Mavericks are 13-2 this year when outrebounding their opponent. UNO is 1-9 when not outrebounding its opponent.
• The Mavericks are 14-2 this year when winning the battle in the paint and are 0-9 when not outscoring their opponents in the lane. During a four-game winning streak in early December, the Mavericks dominated play in the paint, posting a combined 156-46 advantage for an average of 39.0-10.6 per game.
• UNO has played well with a lead this season. The Mavericks are 12-0 when leading at halftime and are 14-0 when tied or leading with five minutes left in regulation. UNO has fallen in all 11 games that its trailed with five minutes to play.

Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl ranks third all-time with 165 career 3-point field goals made. She needs just four more to move alone into second place in school history. Pohl also moved into the top 10 in school history for career offensive rebounds at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 18. Pohl now has 169 career offensive boards to rank fifth all-time.
Meanwhile, Nash ranks second in school history with 268 career steals. Nash needs 64 more to break the school record of 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81. Nash also entered the top five this season in career assists with 356, and her career assist average of 4.6 per game is the best in school history.
Nash Steals Way Into National Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics during its first year in Division I. However, with 4.3 steals per game, Jamie Nash would rank second in Division I in that category. Quinnipiac's Felicia Barron leads the nation with 4.6 steals per game. The Mavs as a team average 11.2 steals per game.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is still young, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 60.6 points per game, which is more than 10 points better than last year's 71.3 average. UNO is also holding opponents to 28.5 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Freshman Cox Makes Early Impact
Freshman Cathleen Cox sparked the Mavs' win over Sioux Falls on Feb. 2 with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting and 2-of-5 from 3-point land. Cox had 14 of her points in the first half, and her seven first-half rebounds broke her career high. She finished with eight boards and her second 20-plus point game of the season, the second-most on the squad behind Jamie Nash. The Elkhorn native also came off the bench and scored a career-high 23 points in a 64-62 win over Missouri Western on Saturday, Dec. 31. Cox went 10-of-17 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Cox is fifth on the team in scoring at 7.0 points per game.
A Quad of Double Doubles
An incredible four Mavericks recorded double-doubles in a 72-70 overtime win over Northwest Missouri State on Dec. 10. Jamie Nash had a game-high 21 points and 11 assists; Paige Frauendorfer had 18 points and 14 rebounds; Heather Pohl had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Rese Huddlin had 11 points and 13 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
