Mavs Fall in Overtime to Finish Season

LAFAYETTE, La. - Brandi Schambough's 3-pointer with eight seconds left in overtime gave Louisiana-Lafayette a 62-60 win over the UNO women's basketball team, and ended the Mavs' season in heartbreaking fashion on Monday afternoon at Earl K. Long Gym.
Stacia Gebers missed a shot at the buzzer that would have tied the game, and the Mavericks finished the season with a 15-12 record in their first Division I season and first under head coach Chance Lindley.
Heather Pohl led the way with 16 points, including 4-of-6 from long distance, in her final game as a Maverick. Taijhe Kelly followed up her first career double-double with a second, scoring 12 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
The Mavericks led the entire game until 25 seconds remained in regulation, when the Ragin' Cajuns' Nicole Morris hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 57-57. Jamie Nash and Gebers missed shots in the final 10 seconds to win the game, sending it to overtime.
In the extra five minutes, Louisiana (6-22) took its first lead of the game with 3:16 left on a jumper by Michelle Brunker to make it 59-57. Nash tied the game on a layup with 1:58 left, and Kelly knocked down a free throw with 1:12 remaining for a 60-59 UNO lead.
The Mavs held strong on the defensive end and rebounded a missed 3-pointer, but failed to extend the lead on a shot by Nash with 31 seconds left. Louisiana called timeout to draw up the final play, but Gebers blocked a shot by Krystal Motley with 14 seconds left. Motley grabbed her own rebound and the Ragin' Cajuns again called timeout. That's when Schambough entered the game for the first time all day and knocked down the gamewinning trey.
UNO jumped out to a 16-5 lead thanks to a strong defensive effort. The Ragin' Cajuns hit just two field goals and turned the ball over 12 times in the game's first 11:11. The Mavs led 25-18 at halftime and pushed the lead to as many as 13 at 49-36 with 8:54 left.
Leading 52-40 with 5:41 left, the Mavs began to see their lead slip away. Louisiana scored on four free throws and an old-fashioned three-point play by Motley to draw within 52-47. Pohl knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:21 left for a 55-47 lead, but Motley answered with a triple of her own and two free throws later to make it 55-52 with 2:16 to go. Pohl again scored for UNO for a little breathing room at 57-52, but Brooklyn Arceneaux got free for a layup with 56 seconds left to cut the lead to three again.

The Mavs hit 21-of-60 (35.0 percent) from the field and 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range. The Ragin' Cajuns went 21-of-63 (33.3 percent) from the floor and 5-of-20 (25.0 percent) from long distance. Louisiana went 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) from the free throw line, while UNO went 12-of-18 (66.7 percent). Motley had a game-high 26 points, with 21 coming in the second half, to lead Louisiana.
All five Maverick starters played at least 37 minutes, with Nash totaling 14 points and seven assists while playing all 45 minutes.
While the Mavs failed to win their third game against a Division I opponent this season, their 15 wins matched the highest win total since 2008-09. Pohl capped her Maverick career third on the school's career 3-pointers made chart with 165.
