OMAHA, Neb. – The Minnesota Golden Gophers scored 1:46 into overtime, edging the UNO Mavericks 3-2 on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The Mavericks dropped to 14-13-6 on the year and 11-9-5 in the WCHA. The Gophers improved their league-leading record to 18-7-0 and 22-11-1 overall. The two teams conclude the series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
On the winning play, defenseman Jake Parenteau took a shot from the left point. It missed, but Nate Condon fed the puck back for a second try which Parenteau buried past a screened Ryan Massa for his first goal of the season.
UNO had led 2-1 entering the third period, but the Gophers tied it when Nick Bjugstad got open for a backhander that beat Massa through the pads for his team-leading 23rd goal of the year.
Minnesota opened the scoring at 5:53 of the first period. Sam Warning got behind the UNO defense, walked down the left wing and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Massa for his fifth goal of the year.
In the second period, the Mavericks tied the game just as a power play expired. Terry Broadhurst threw a pass out of the right corner to Brock Montpetit who hammered home his sixth goal of the year. Defenseman Bryce Aneloski also picked up an assist, stretching his point-scoring streak to 10 games.
UNO took the lead on a penalty kill later in the period. Andrej Sustr sent Jayson Megna and Josh Archibald away on a 2-on-1. Megna held the puck and snapped a hard shot over the glove hand of goalie Kent Patterson. It was his 12th goal of the year.
Massa made 29 saves in the loss while Patterson had 22 saves for the Gophers.
