Series Record: First meeting
The UNO Maverick women's basketball team will close out the home portion of its 2011-12 schedule on Senior Night on Friday against NAIA opponent Dakota Wesleyan. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse, and the Mavs will pay tribute to their lone senior, Heather Pohl, before the game. Last Time Out
VERMILLION, S.D. - The UNO women's basketball team fell to future Summit League foe South Dakota on Tuesday night, 58-38, at the DakotaDome. The Mavericks fell to 13-11 on the year after their lowest scoring output and shooting percentage of the season. In a defensive first half, the Mavs scored just eight points en route to trailing 23-8 at halftime. UNO shot just 3-of-26 (11.5 percent) from the field in the first half. On the plus side, the Mavericks tightened up their defense and allowed the Coyotes just 23 points in the first half on 8-of-38 (21.1 percent) shooting. In the second half, the Mavs finally hit some baskets to put 30 points on the board in the period. But it was too late to change the outcome of the game, as South Dakota built its lead to as many as 30 with 5:09 left in the game. Nash had eight points, and Cathleen Cox had seven points. Kelly finished with five points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education. Lindley is assisted by Jason Flores, in his eighth year at UNO, and first-year UNO coaches Shanele Stires and Elena Lovato.
Jason Christensen is in his second year as the head coach at Dakota Wesleyan. Christensen has a 21-37 record at the school and in his career. Christensen is a 1998 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan. He is assisted by Jory Hansen.
Scouting the Opponents
Dakota Wesleyan is 15-12 on the year and is 6-11 in the NAIA Great Plains Athletic Conference. Amanda Hart leads the team with 11.7 points per game, hitting 32.0 percent from 3-point range. Kim Johnson averages 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while Elizabeth Lamb averages 8.3 points per game. Whitnee Clayton averages 9.8 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game but has missed the last three games.

1) With 10 points at South Dakota, Heather Pohl eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in her Maverick career. Pohl became the 23rd player in UNO history to reach 1,000 points, as she enters Senior Night with 1,005 career points.
2) Paige Frauendorfer leads UNO with 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Frauendorfer has a team-high nine double-doubles this year and has set career highs in points (24) and rebounds (15).
3) Jamie Nash is close behind Frauendorfer at 12.4 points per game. Nash also averages 6.1 assists per game and 4.3 steals per game, which ranks second in the nation.
4) The Mavericks are 12-2 this year when outrebounding their opponent, and UNO has won the battle on the boards in nine of 11 home games so far this season. UNO is 1-9 when not outrebounding its opponent.
5) The Mavericks are 13-2 this year when winning the battle in the paint and are 0-9 when not outscoring their opponents in the lane. During a four-game winning streak in early December, the Mavericks dominated play in the paint, posting a combined 156-46 advantage for an average of 39.0-10.6 per game.

Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl ranks third all-time with 161 career 3-point field goals made. She needs just seven more to move into second place in school history. Pohl also moved into the top 10 in school history for career offensive rebounds at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 18. Pohl now has 166 career offensive boards to rank sixth all-time. She needs two more to break into the top five.
Meanwhile, Nash ranks second in school history with 265 career steals after grabbing two at South Dakota on Feb. 7. Nash needs 67 more to break the school record of 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81. Nash also entered the top 10 this season in career assists with 349, which is fifth, and her career assist average of 4.6 per game is the best in school history.
Nash Steals Way Into National Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics during its first year in Division I. However, with 4.3 steals per game, Jamie Nash would rank second in Division I in that category. Quinnipiac's Felicia Barron leads the nation with 4.5 steals per game. The Mavs as a team average 11.2 steals per game.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is still young, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 60.9 points per game, which is more than 10 points better than last year's 71.3 average. UNO is also holding opponents to 27.7 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Freshman Cox Makes Early Impact
Freshman Cathleen Cox sparked the Mavs' win over Sioux Falls on Feb. 2 with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting and 2-of-5 from 3-point land. Cox had 14 of her points in the first half, and her seven first-half rebounds broke her career high. She finished with eight boards and her second 20-plus point game of the season, the second-most on the squad behind Jamie Nash. The Elkhorn native also came off the bench and scored a career-high 23 points in a 64-62 win over Missouri Western on Saturday, Dec. 31. Cox went 10-of-17 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Cox is tied for fourth on the team in scoring at 7.3 points per game.
Pohl Shoots Into Top Three
Senior Heather Pohl hit 6-of-10 from 3-point range on Jan. 30 against Western Illinois to surpass Tricia Floyd (1988-92) for third place on the all-time 3-pointers made chart in school history. Pohl, who finished the game with a season-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, needs just eight more treys to pass Karen Thies (2004-07) for second place.
A Quad of Double Doubles
An incredible four Mavericks recorded double-doubles in a 72-70 overtime win over Northwest Missouri State on Dec. 10. Jamie Nash had a game-high 21 points and 11 assists; Paige Frauendorfer had 18 points and 14 rebounds; Heather Pohl had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Rese Huddlin had 11 points and 13 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
Next Up for the Mavericks
The Mavs don't return to the court again until next weekend, when they hit the road for their final two games of the season. UNO is at New Orleans on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 12 p.m., then the Mavs end the season on Monday, Feb. 20 at Louisiana-Lafayette at 2 p.m.
