Four Mavericks Tabbed for All-Independent Honors

Complete 2012 College Sports Madness Independent All-Conference Teams
OMAHA, Neb. – Four UNO men's basketball players were named to the 2012 Independent Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams, College Sports Madness has announced.
Senior guard Mitch Albers was a first-team selection, while junior forward Alex Welhouse and sophomore center John Karhoff were second-team picks. Freshman guard CJ Carter was also voted Freshman of the Year.
Albers was named to the first team after averaging a team-leading 18.3 points per game in his final season. The Papillion, Neb., native shot .485 (188-388) from the floor and .785 (113-144) from the free throw line, while also ranking second on the team with 43 threes made. Albers consistently ranked in the top 35 nationally in scoring, and he finished his Maverick career at No. 2 on the school scoring charts with 1,790 points.
Welhouse, who hails from Kaukauna, Wis., and Karhoff, an Omaha native, were both second-team honorees. Welhouse was the Mavericks' leading rebounder with 6.7 boards per game, had a team-best 50 3-pointers made and ranked third on the team with 10.4 points per contest. Karhoff averaged 12.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, both of which were second on the squad. He also shot .529 (146-276) from the field and .741 (80-108) at the charity stripe.
Carter earned the Freshman of the Year award after averaging 10.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game in his inaugural campaign. He was the first true freshman to start for UNO since 2006-07, and his 34 steals led the Mavericks this year. Carter, a product of Omaha Benson, totaled 17 double-figure scoring efforts and was UNO's third-best scorer over 29 games.
UNO, which is in its first year of reclassifying to NCAA Division I, completed the 2011-12 season with an overall record of 11-18.
