OMAHA, Neb. – Megan Schmale and Amy Taylor have signed National Letters of Intent to join the UNO volleyball program in 2012, head coach Rose Shires announced Thursday.
“Amy and Megan will bring some much-needed height to our program,” Shires said. “They will both make an immediate impact as we begin play in The Summit League in 2012.”
MEGAN SCHMALE
Outside Hitter, 6-0, Murdock, Neb. (Elmwood-Murdock)
A 6-0 outside hitter, Schmale starred for Coach Peter Vavak at Elmwood-Murdock High School in Murdock, Neb., where she lettered four years in volleyball, basketball and track & field. In volleyball, Schmale was a three-time all-state selection, including first-team recognition from the Lincoln Journal Star, which also named her honorary captain of the 2011 Class C-2 team. She also earned three first-team all-conference awards and was an honorable mention pick as a freshman.
As a center for the basketball team, Schmale helped the Knights to back-to-back conference championships, and Elmwood-Murdock finished fourth at the Class C-2 state tournament in 2010. In track & field, she has competed in the discus, 4x800 relay and high jump.
Schmale also plays club ball for Nebraska Premier. The daughter of Leigh and Julie Schmale, she plans to major in elementary education at UNO.
“Megan is a dynamic player with a high volleyball IQ and can attack from any position,” Shires said. “She is the type of player who can take over a game and carry the weight of the team on her shoulders. Megan comes from great high school and club programs and has had the opportunity to compete as a very high level.”
AMY TAYLOR
Middle Blocker, 6-3, Golden, Colo. (Golden)
A 6-3 middle blocker, Taylor lettered three years for Coach Barry Lago at Golden High School in Golden, Colo. Taylor was a two-time first-team all-conference honoree for the Demons, and she also played for the Juggernaut Volleyball Club and Colorado Juniors.
The daughter of Budd and Lynda Taylor, she plans to major in exercise science at UNO.
“Amy has the ability to make a huge impact for us at the net,” Shires said. “She hits a very heavy ball and will be a huge block for us. Amy is the type of player who will be relied upon to dominate at the net. Her club, Colorado Juniors, is known throughout the country as an excellent training program, and Amy is ready to compete at a very high level immediately.”
