MACOMB, Ill. - A strong second round propelled the UNO men's golf team into fifth place after the first day of play at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational at Western Illinois.
The Mavericks shot 295 as a team in the second 18 holes of the day and sit one stroke out of a tie for third with a total team score of 601. Indian Hills Community College leads the 15-team tournament with a score of 594. North Dakota State is second at 598, and Western Illinois and South Dakota State are tied for third at 600.
UNO shot 306 as a team in the opening round led by Mitch Johnson's 75. Alex Holtan and Michael Shukis each shot 76.
In round two, Karl Krieser posted UNO's low round of the day with a 71 while Holtan had a 73 and Shukis carded a 74.
Through the first two rounds, Holtan leads the Mavericks with a total score of 149, putting him in a tie for 13th overall. Shukis is at 150, good for a tied for 17th. Krieser and Taylor Sidzyik are each at 156, putting them in a tie for 33rd while Johnson is one stroke back.
Round three begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
