Negrete and Elsasser Named GWC Players of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Nebraska Omaha's Molly Negrete and Dana Elsasser have been named Great West Conference Softball Players of the Week after leading the Mavericks to a 2-1 record last week. The honors were announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Negrete, a junior from Omaha, Neb., went 2-for-2 with a walk against Nebraska for half of the Mavs' hits in a 1-0 loss to the Huskers in eight innings. She then went 3-for-7 in a doubleheader on Sunday to lift the Mavs to a sweep of GWC foe North Dakota. Negrete posted a .556 batting average, two runs, a double and no strikeouts, along with a team-best .667 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage on the week. In addition, the third baseman recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 20 chances.
The pitching honor went to Elsasser who went 1-1 after shutting out Nebraska through seven innings on Wednesday and shutting out North Dakota on Sunday for her seventh shutout of the season. The sophomore righthander from Hershey, Neb., held Nebraska to one run on seven hits and posted a 2-0 win over North Dakota in the first game of the doubleheader. Elsasser recorded an 0.47 ERA and held the opponents to a .218 batting average on the week. Her 0.85 ERA this season is the second best among Division I pitchers.
Others nominated for the weekly honors were Houston Baptist's Beth Evans (P), North Dakota's Erica Younan (1B), and Utah Valley's Krystin Jachim (SS) and Tiffany Mills (RHP).
The 2012 Great West Conference Softball Championship will be held May 13-14, at Farmers Branch, Texas, and will be hosted by defending champion Houston Baptist.
