UNO Releases 2012-13 Hockey Schedule

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Omaha hockey team will open its 16th season with college hockey's traditional opening tournament, The Icebreaker, in Kansas City, Mo. The Mavericks also will play the first outdoor game in school and Omaha history. Those games are part of the 36-game schedule for the 2012-13 season released today.
“The Icebreaker and the outdoor game are sure to make this one of the most memorable seasons of UNO hockey,” said Trev Alberts, UNO's Director of Athletics. “UNO ranked fourth in the country in home attendance last season, and we know our fans are going to enjoy all of the home games on our schedule this season.”
“This schedule is great for both our fans and our players,” said Dean Blais, UNO's head coach. “The WCHA schedule continues to be the toughest in college hockey, and we have another challenging schedule of non-conference games as well. Our fans, many of whom travel to see us play on the road, are going to get an outstanding game every night .”
The Mavericks will face a strong field in The Icebreaker. They will take on Army in the second game of the opening day on Oct. 12. They'll face either Maine or Notre Dame the following day.
UNO will open its final season of WCHA play on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, by hosting rivalry partner Bemidji State in the first two of four meetings during the season. The Mavericks are in a scheduling pod with Minnesota Duluth and Michigan Tech which means they also will play those two teams four times.
In all, the Mavericks will play 28 league games leading up to the WCHA Playoffs which begin at campus sites on March 15-17.
UNO will play in its first outdoor game ever when it hosts North Dakota on Saturday, Feb. 9 as part of the “Mutual of Omaha Battles on Ice”, a rare doubleheader that includes a game between the Omaha Lancers and the Lincoln Stars as the opener of the historic day of hockey. UNO and UND will play the first game of their WCHA series the previous night at the CenturyLink Center.
The other home WCHA series for the Mavericks in addition to their meetings with Bemidji State and North Dakota include Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 10-11), Minnesota State (Dec. 14-15), Colorado College (Jan. 4-5), Michigan Tech (Feb. 1-2) and Wisconsin (March 1-2).
In addition to The Icebreaker, the Mavericks will play three other non-conference series. They'll host former CCHA rival Northern Michigan on Oct. 19-20, Alabama-Huntsville on Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 23-24 and finish with a trip to Quinnipiac of ECAC Hockey on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29 and 30.
The Mavericks will begin play with their traditional exhibition game against a Canadian university. The Mavs will host Lethbridge for the second time in their history on Monday, Oct. 8. UNO also will play an exhibition game against the U.S. National Team Development Program at home on Friday, Feb. 22.
