Draft Day Ahead For Two Future Mavs

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - When the National Hockey League holds its annual amateur draft this weekend, two new members of the Nebraska Omaha hockey team could very well find themselves on the stage of the CONSOL Energy Center.
Incoming freshmen Brian Cooper and Anthony Stolarz are both expected to be chosen in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft being held on Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23, at the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Cooper is currently ranked 68th among all North American skaters by the NHL's Central Scouting while Stolarz is ranked fourth among all North American goalies.
The draft could mark the end to an eventful week for both players. They were both named to USA Hockey's junior evaluation camp roster on Monday. The group of 46 players will eventually be pared down to the U.S. Natonal Junior Team which will compete in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia in December. UNO head coach Dean Blais coached the junior team in two of the last three years, winning a gold medal in 2010.
Three Mavericks have already been drafted by NHL teams. Senior Brent Gwidt was chosen by the Washington Capitals in the sixth round in 2006. Fellow senior Bryce Aneloski was picked in the seventh round by the Ottawa Senators in 2010. Sophomore Josh Archibald was taken by the Penguins in the sixth round last year.
In addition, two other incoming freshmen also have been drafted. Forward Tanner Lane was taken by the Atlanta Thrashers (now the Winnipeg Jets) in the sixth round in 2010 while defenseman Nick Seeler was a fifth-round choice of the Minnesota Wild in 2011.
Round one of the draft will be carried live on the NBC Sports Network at 6 p.m. CT on Friday. Rounds two through seven will be shown live on the NHL Network on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. CT.
