Flores Named Head Coach at Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. - UNO assistant women's basketball coach Jason Flores has been named the head women's basketball coach at Division II Fort Lewis College, where he served as associate head coach from 2000-04.
Flores, who has been a UNO assistant for the past eight years, will take over a successful Skyhawk program, which is coming off a 26-5 season in 2011-12 and a second-round appearance in the NCAA DII playoffs. Former head coach Mark Kellogg took the head job at Northwest Missouri State following the season. Fort Lewis College is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
“The great experiences I have had at the University of Nebraska Omaha have been numerous,” said Flores. “It has been extremely exciting rebuilding another program, and more recently making the tough transition to Division I. There are so many great people from the players to fellow coaches to administrators that I will miss dearly.”
Flores came to UNO as an assistant in 2004 with new head coach Patty Patton Shearer, with whom he coached four years at Fort Lewis. Like they did at Fort Lewis, Flores and Patton Shearer rebuilt the Maverick program instantly. After taking over a program that went 5-22 before they arrived, Flores and Patton Shearer guided UNO to a 20-11 record in just two years for the program's first winning season in six years and the most wins since 1991-92.
The Mavs went on to post four consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1982, including an 11-9 record in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2008-09, the Mavs' first winning record in conference play since 1991-92.
When Chance Lindley took over as head coach in 2011, Flores again proved integral in helping take a program to new heights, as the Mavericks transitioned from Division II to Division I. In the Mavs' first year as a Division I school in 2011-12, they posted a 15-12 record, the most wins since 2007-08.
In Flores' eight years at UNO, he assisted in developing two all-region selections, four NCC Newcomers of the Year and six all-conference honorees. Flores also led the way in the Mavs' academic success, as 18 Mavericks earned conference academic honor roll selections in his eight years. The Mavs placed in the Division II Top 25 Team GPA four out of seven years, including a team GPA of 3.425 in 2010-11.
Prior to arriving at UNO in 2004, Flores spent four years working with Patton Shearer at Fort Lewis. Flores and Patton Shearer turned a 3-23 team the year before their arrival into a 17-8 squad in just two years. In 2003-04, Flores and Patton Shearer guided Fort Lewis to a school-record 23 wins and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's West Division title. In his final three seasons at Fort Lewis, the Skyhawks went 58-25 (.699) and earned a trip to the NCAA DII Tournament in 2003-04, the first appearance in school history.
“I am very excited to be coming back to Durango and Fort Lewis College,” said Flores. “Obviously this is a homecoming of sorts, as I have been here before with Patty Patton Shearer when we were charged with rebuilding the program when we arrived in 2000. Over those four years I was able to be a part of something special with many firsts in program history, and was proud that we were able to leave a great foundation for years to come.”
Prior to his college coaching experience, Flores was an assistant coach at the brand-new Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, Ariz., where he also worked with Patton Shearer. During that stretch, Flores also served as the head freshman coach for three years and the head junior varsity coach for two seasons. Catalina Foothills won five conference championships and appeared in two state finals, winning the Class 4A state championship in 1997.
Flores is a 1995 graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in history.
