Mavs Open Fall Season at South Dakota

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha men's and women's golf teams will begin their falls seasons with 18-hole exhibition matches against Summit League foe South Dakota on Friday, Aug. 31 in Vermillion, S.D. It will be the only exhibition match for either team before regular play begins on Sept. 10.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 10th season at UNO, the second as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his second year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
A Busy Fall
The Maverick men's and women's teams both have full schedules this fall. In addition to their exhibition match at South Dakota, the men will play in six events including tournaments at Summit League foes South Dakota State (Sept. 30 - Oct. 1) and Kansas City (Oct. 15-16). The women also have six events in addition to the exhibition match. They'll also take part in the tournament at South Dakota State and play at Missouri Valley Conference schools Missouri State (Oct. 15-16) and Evansville (Oct. 29-30).
Everyone is Back
The UNO men return all five starters from their 2011-12 team, the first of the Division I era. Freshmen Mitch Johnson (78.7) and Mike Shukis (78.7) tied for the team scoring lead while fellow freshmen Taylor Sidzyik (79.0) and Karl Krieser (79.0) were right behind. Another freshman, Alex Holtan, was fifth in team scoring with an average of 81.0. Shukis posted UNO's only medalist finish last year, winning the Nebraska Kearney Invitational on Sept. 9-10.
Change at the Top
The UNO women lost two seniors off of last year's roster in Rebecca Pollock and Armana Christianson who left the team after the fall season. However, the Mavericks return three letter winners including junior captain Brooke Thilges who was third on the team in scoring with an average of 85.0. Senior Elizabeth Havekost (85.3) and redshirt junior Melyssa Doerr (85.5) were 4-5 in scoring. Junior transfer Danielle Kuchar did not return to the team.
New Faces
The men's team added two freshmen and two junior college transfer to their roster. Omaha native Mitch Ryan comes to UNO from Millard North high school while Reid Weibe is a graduate of Sutton high school in Sutton, Neb. Mike Muller is another Omaha native and Millard North grad who played two years at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Alex Overfelt played for Papillion-Lavista high school before competing at Southeast Community College for the last two seasons. The women's team welcomes five new players this year including four freshmen and a transfer. Sophomore Sophie Peters comes to UNO from Fremont high school by way of a year at Morningside College. Freshmen Gentry Carveth and Makenna Kroeker both played at Lincoln Southwest high school while Albion, Neb. native Britany Seda played for Boone Central high school. Katie Kesti is UNO's only freshman not from Nebraska. She starred at Red Wing high school in Red Wing, Minn.
Next Up for the Mavs
Following this week's exhibition, both the men's and women's teams return to action in two tournaments hosted by Nebraska on Sept. 10-11. The men will play in the Fairway Club Invitational at Arbor Links Golf Course in Nebraska City while the women will compete in the Chip-N Club Invitational at The Country Club of Lincoln.
