Mavs Add Phillips, Rostampour for 2012-13

OMAHA, Neb. – A pair of transfer student-athletes, Alex Phillips and Mike Rostampour, have joined the Omaha men's basketball program for the 2012-13 season, head coach Derrin Hansen announced Thursday.
Alex Phillips
6-3 – 190 – Guard – Smiths Station, Ala. (New Mexico JC/Smiths Station)
Phillips played two years at New Mexico Junior College for coach Chris Tifft. As a sophomore, he was named first-team all-conference and averaged 10.3 points per game, including 17.8 points per contest in league play. NMJC finished 23-9, tying for second in the WJACC and appearing in the regional tournament. In Phillips' freshman season, the Thunderbirds went 19-9 to tie for fourth in the WJACC, and he was invited to the Jerry Mullens Top 100 Camp.
At Smiths Station High School, Phillips was a three-year letterwinner for coach Dewayne Drakeford. A three-time first-team all-state selection, he averaged 22 points, five rebounds and six assists per game as a senior. Also a three-time All-Bi-City pick, Phillips led the Panthers to a 30-1 record and their first state championship since 1967 as a junior. He was voted most valuable player of the state championship game, in which he posted 29 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.
“Alex had a tremendous start to his career at New Mexico Junior College with Coach Tifft, who has always done a great job with that program,” Hansen said. “Alex bring us athleticism, a nose for the ball and ability to score, which will give him a chance to compete for playing time immediately.”
Mike Rostampour
6-8 – 215 – Forward – West St. Paul, Minn. (St. Cloud State/Grayson College/Henry Sibley)
Rostampour joins the Mavericks after playing his sophomore season at St. Cloud State under coach Kevin Schlagel. As a starter in 2011-12, he averaged eight points and five rebounds per game and led the Huskies with .530 shooting from 3-point range. SCSU went 21-10 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Rostampour was also a standout in the classroom, maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average.
Prior to his time at St. Cloud State, Rostampour played at Grayson County College in Denison, Texas. As a freshman, he averaged eight points and five rebounds per game, helping the Vikings to a record of 20-11 and an appearance in the Region 5 Tournament.
Rostampour previously played for coach Tom Dasovich at Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights, Minn. A two-year letterwinner, he averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior and helped Sibley to a record of 25-7 and a third-place finish in the state tournament. Rostampour was also named most valuable player of the Suburban Conference, was selected to the MBCA All-Star Game and won the slam dunk competition. He played AAU ball for coach Jerry Robertson of Minnesota Pump N Run, which finished as one of the top 10 clubs in the nation.
“Mike brings us a tremendous energy level to our program,” Hansen said. “His work ethic and experience will pay off for us in the future, as he has to redshirt this season, per NCAA rules. He comes from St. Cloud State, a program we really respect under the leadership of Coach Schlagel, and we're excited to have Mike join our team.”
