Maverick Golfers Square Off With USD

VERMILLION, S.D. - The Omaha men's and women's golf teams earned a split of two exhibition matches with South Dakota on Friday afternoon. The women outscored the Coyotes 316-323 during the 18-hole match while the men were edged by their hosts, 298-301.
In the women's match, junior Melyssa Doerr and freshman Britany Seda tied with South Dakota's Jordan Rearick with the top score of the day at 77. Sophomore transfer Sophie Peters and senior Elizabeth Havekost each carded an 81 while junior Brooke Thilges was fifth in scoring for UNO at 82.
Freshmen Makenna Kroeker (85), Katie Kesti (88) and Jessica Lindblad (113) rounded out the scoring for UNO.
Karl Krieser shot the low round on the men's side with a score of 72 while freshman Reid Weibe was right behind at 75. Fellow freshman Mitch Ryan and Taylor Sidzyik each carded a 77 while junior transfer Mike Muller shot a 78.
UNO, which fielded a team of nine golfers, got a 79 from Michael Shukis and an 80 from Alex Holtan. Junior transfer Alex Overfelt (81) and Mitch Johnson (83) completed the scoring for the Mavs.
The Coyotes had two players shoot 74 and three more shoot 75.
Both teams begin regular season play on Sept. 10-11 in separate tournaments at Nebraska. The men will take part in the Fairway Club Invitational at Arbor Links Golf Course in Nebraska City while the women will play in the Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln.
