OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Omaha athletic department announced today that it is bringing its hockey and basketball broadcasts to the top sports radio stations in Omaha, 1620AM The Zone and 1180 AM The Zone 2. The stations will combine to air nearly 60 games during the 2012-13 season. The five-year agreement was brokered by Nelligan Sports Marketing, the multi-media rights holder for Omaha Athletics.
“We are excited to partner with the ZONE stations to bring both hockey and men's basketball to the premier destination for sports radio in our market,” said Trev Alberts, UNO's Director of Athletics. “This is a relationship that not only makes hockey a cornerstone of the programming but also puts our men's basketball team back on the air during our first full year in the Summit League. Over the term of this agreement, we look forward to working with The Zone to further grow our presence on its airwaves and online.”
“This is a tremendous partnership for our stations,” said Zone General Manager Andy Ruback. “Listeners are deeply rooted in UNO sports tradition, and both teams have a following on a regional level. The dual coverage on both Zone and Zone 2 will mean listeners can always stay in touch with the two premiere sports programs.”
“We're thrilled about our new partnership with the Zone stations,” said Nelligan Sports Marketing Senior Vice President, John Penney. “This agreement provides the UNO with outstanding coverage of its hockey and men's basketball teams as well as provides our current and future corporate partners with an outstanding platform to reach the college sports fans located throughout the region.”
Operations Manager Neil Nelkin said coverage will be shared on the two Zone sports stations with Zone 2 carrying all of the UNO hockey games including 30-minute pre and post-game shows. Weekly, the station will feature head coach Dean Blais during the UNO Coaches Show program. “We are pleased to bring UNO Sports to the Omaha fan base. As the programs continue to grow and evolve, we look forward to partnering with the Mavericks to build exciting and successful platforms,” said Nelkin.
In addition to the broadcasts, game day coverage for both sports will be streamed live on-line at 1620thezone.com.
