Maverick Women Travel To Edwardsville

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha women's golf team returns to action on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24-25 when it competes in the SIUE Intercollegiate at Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The three-round event will take place at the Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville. The men's golf team is off until Sept. 30.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 10th season at UNO, the second as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his second year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Up North
The Maverick men's and women's teams both competed in the Concordia University Invitational on Sept. 16-17 in Lake Elmo, Minn. last week. The men won the 36-hole event with a score of 601, beating runner-up Augustana by three strokes. Mitch Johnson led the Mavericks with a two-day score of 148, putting him a tie for second overall. Alex Overfelt (150), Taylor Sidzyik (153), Mike Muller (155) and Karl Krieser (156) finished 2-5 for the Mavs. The women's team finished third at Concordia with a score of 641, behind Augustana (620) and Grand Valley State (624). Sophie Peters had UNO's top score at 154 to finish in a tie for fourth overall. She was followed by Britany Seda and Brooke Thilges (both 162), Elizabeth Havekost (164) and Melyssa Doerr (171).
Everyone is Back
The UNO men return all five starters from their 2011-12 team, the first of the Division I era. Freshmen Mitch Johnson (78.7) and Mike Shukis (78.7) tied for the team scoring lead while fellow freshmen Taylor Sidzyik (79.0) and Karl Krieser (79.0) were right behind. Another freshman, Alex Holtan, was fifth in team scoring with an average of 81.0. Shukis posted UNO's only medalist finish last year, winning the Nebraska Kearney Invitational on Sept. 9-10.
Change at the Top
The UNO women lost two seniors off of last year's roster in Rebecca Pollock and Armana Christianson who left the team after the fall season. However, the Mavericks return three letter winners including junior captain Brooke Thilges who was third on the team in scoring with an average of 85.0. Senior Elizabeth Havekost (85.3) and redshirt junior Melyssa Doerr (85.5) were 4-5 in scoring. Junior transfer Danielle Kuchar did not return to the team.
New Faces
The men's team added two freshmen and two junior college transfer to their roster. Omaha native Mitch Ryan comes to UNO from Millard North high school while Reid Weibe is a graduate of Sutton high school in Sutton, Neb. Mike Muller is another Omaha native and Millard North grad who played two years at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Alex Overfelt played for Papillion-Lavista high school before competing at Southeast Community College for the last two seasons. The women's team welcomes five new players this year including four freshmen and a transfer. Sophomore Sophie Peters comes to UNO from Fremont high school by way of a year at Morningside College. Freshmen Gentry Carveth and Makenna Kroeker both played at Lincoln Southwest high school while Albion, Neb. native Britany Seda played for Boone Central high school. Katie Kesti is UNO's only freshman not from Nebraska. She starred at Red Wing high school in Red Wing, Minn.
Next Up for the Mavs
The men will compete in the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational at South Dakota on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and also send golfers to the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at Kansas State on Oct. 1 and 2. The women also will play in the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational.
