Weekly Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha men's and women's golf team begin a busy stretch of play on Sunday, Sept. 30 when both teams tee off in the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational at South Dakota State. The three-round tournament takes place at the Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 10th season at UNO, the second as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his second year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
In Case You Missed It
The women took third place at the SIUE Intercollegiate on Sept. 17-18 at Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The Mavs finished with a team score of 673, trailing only Southern Illinois (641) and Lipscomb (662). Freshman Katie Kesti, in her first collegiate tournament, led the Mavericks in scoring with a two-round total of 163, good for fifth overall in a field of 60 golfers. Brooke Thilges and Melyssa Doerr each fired a score of 170 to tie for second for UNO and 18th overall. Elizabeth Havekost was fourth for UNO at 174, putting her in a tie for 21st. Sophie Peters completed the scoring with a 36-hole tally of 179. The men's golf team was off last week.
