First Road Trip Takes Mavs To Northern Michigan

The Omaha Mavericks will hit the road for the first time this season when they visit Northern Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19. Both games begin at 6:07 p.m. CT from the Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 1-1-0 so far this season having split a pair of games with visiting Bentley last weekend.UNO lost 6-4 in the first game but rebounded for a 4-2 win the following night. The Mavs will play three straight non-conference series to open the season before they play their first NCHC game. Last year, UNO was 9-9-1 on the road.
Northern Michigan is 0-2-0 after dropping 5-2 and 2-1 decisions at Wisconsin last weekend. Last season, the Wildcats were 15-19-4 overall and 9-15-4-1 in the CCHA, good for 10th place.
All time, the series between the two schools is tied 16-16-2 but Northern Michigan holds an 11-4-2 advantage at home.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks' season-opening series with Bentley was as even as the scores indicate with each team clinching a win with a late empty-net goal. On Friday, Bentley got out to a 2-0 lead before Nick Seeler scored late to leave UNO down just 2-1 after one. Zahn Raubenheimer tied the game at 1:22 of the second before Bentley reeled off three straight goals to take a 5-2 lead into the dressing room. The Mavericks got goals from Josh Archibald and Austin Ortega just 1:52 apart midway through the third to stoke the fires of a comeback bid. But Bentley's Brett Gensler scored into an empty net with 20 seconds remaining to ice the game.
On Saturday, Bentley again got the early lead, but Brock Montpetit scored with 0.5 remaining in the first to tie the game. Dominic Zombo then gave the Mavs their first lead of the weekend with a tally at 1:36 of the second. The Falcons tied the game on a power play, but Jake Guentzel responded on a UNO man advantage just 2:33 later to put the Mavs up 3-2 at the intermission. Archibald scored his second of the weekend into an empty net with 30.5 seconds remaining to seal UNO's first win of the year.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a career record of 337-184-47 (.634) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 75-69-16 (.553).
lais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State .
Walt Kyle is in his 12th season at Northern Michigan. The 1981 graduate of NMU is 208-188-49 all-time leading the Wildcats. He is assisted by Joe Shawhan and John Kyle.
