Mavericks Make Acquaintances with Cornell

The Omaha Mavericks return home this weekend to host No. 19 Cornell of ECAC Hockey on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m., and Saturday's game starts at 7:07 p.m. The two games mark the first ever meetings between the schools in hockey.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 2-2-0 following a split at Northern Michigan last weekend. The Mavs opened with a 2-1 win on Friday before losing 6-3 the following night. This is the third straight non-conference series to open the season before UNO plays its first NCHC game. The Mavs are 1-1-0 at home this year.
These will be the first regular season games of the season for Cornell which is coming off a 7-2 exhibition win over York last Saturday. Last year, the Big Red was 15-16-3 overall and 8-11-3 in ECAC Hockey, putting it in a tie for ninth place.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks split their first road trip of the year last weekend at Northern Michigan. On Friday, the Mavericks scored first when Ryan Walters notched his first goal of the season on a power play at 2:35 of the second period. The Wildcats responded with a five-on-three powerplay goal from Stephan Vigier at 7:06 of the period. UNO got the game winner in the third when Brock Montpetit lifted a rebound over goalie Mathias Dahlstrom with 2:51 to play. Kirk Thompson made 28 saves to earn the win.
On Saturday, Northern Michigan won a penalty-filled game that featured 19 total power plays including 10 for the home team. Jake Johnson opened the scoring at 2:39 for NMU, but the Mavs responded with a powerplay tally from Josh Archibald with 22 seconds to go in the first to tie the game. The Wildcats blew open the game in the second period with powerplay goals from Ryan Daugherty, CJ Ludwid and Vigier to make it 4-1. The Mavs got one goal back as Walters tallied on the power play late in the second to make it 4-2. NMU's Brock Maschmeyer scored a powerplay goal at 7:49 of the third, but again the Mavs would close the game on a shorthanded goal by Dominic Zombo. Erik Higby iced the game for NMU with an empty netter at 18:14. Thompson made 20 saves in his first loss of the year.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a career record of 338-185-47 (.634) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 76-70-16 (.519).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State .
Mike Schafer is in his 19th season behind the bench at Cornell. The 1986 graduate of Cornell is 347-198-66 all-time leading his alma mater. He is assisted by Ben Syer and Topher Scott.
