IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Omaha men's basketball pushed Iowa to the limit and led nearly the entire game on Sunday afternoon before falling 83-75 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 1-1 (0-1 Summit League), while the Hawkeyes improve to 2-0 (0-0 Big Ten).

Four Mavericks scored in double figures for the day, led by a game-best 22 points from junior guard CJ Carter. The Omaha native shot 8-for-21 from the field with four 3-pointers and was 2-for-2 at the line. Carter added four rebounds, three steals and an assist.

Sophomore guard Devin Patterson added 13 points, four boards, three assists and four steals. Senior center John Karhoff and senior guard Justin Simmons each had 11 points, with Karhoff chipping in five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Simmons also had a board, three assists and a block.

Senior forward Matt Hagerbaumer matched his career high on the glass with 11 rebounds and added two points, three assists and a steal.

Iowa's Aaron White proved a challenge for the Mavericks, finishing with a double-double on 20 points and 15 rebounds, as well as two helpers and a steal. White shot 5-for-10 from the floor and was 10-for-12 at the free throw line. Roy Devyn Marble had another 1 points with five boards, four assists and two steals, and he finished 11-for-14 at the line.

Zach McCabe and Anthony Clemmons added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Hawkeyes.

As a team, Omaha shot 39 percent (28-of-71) from the floor, 29 percent (8-of-28) from long range and 69 percent (11-of-16) at the charity stripe. Iowa finished at a 38 percent clip (21-of-56) from the field and 21 percent (3-of-14) from beyond the arc. The Hawkeyes hit 38 of their 49 free throws to overcome 18 turnovers.

Omaha opened to a quick 4-1 lead with a pair of free throws from junior forward Mike Rostampour, but Iowa came back with buckets from White and Melsahn Basabe. The Mavericks rallied to tie it at 11-11 with a 3-pointer from Carter, then knotted it again at 13-13 with a tip-in by Karhoff. UNO then worked out to a 20-15 lead with a three from sophomore guard Marcus Tyus and pushed it to a five-point margin again at 27-22 with a Carter trey at 7:39. Through the Hawkeyes brought it within one twice more, Carter connected on another 3-pointer at 2:07, then put down a dunk in transition at 1:34 to push the Mavs' lead to 40-33. Iowa cut it down to 40-36, but Karhoff knocked in a three of his own with 18 seconds left in the half, giving Omaha a 43-36 advantage at the break.

After Carter's 13-point first-half effort, the Mavericks maintained their lead for much of the second stanza. At 17:41, Omaha took a six-point lead again after Patterson picked up a steal and hit a 3-pointer to make it 50-44. Iowa got it back within one twice more with free throws from White and Mike Gesell, but a Simmons three kept UNO ahead at 57-53. The Hawkeyes once more cut it to 57-56, and Omaha responded with a Tyus jumper and foul shots from Carter that extended its lead to 61-56 with 9:56 left.

Jarrod Uthoff then hit a pair of free throws, as did White, pulling Iowa with one at 61-60. A Clemmons layup at 9:12 gave the Hawkeyes their first lead since 14:07 in the first half, but Carter responded with a jumper to put UNO back up 63-62. With a White basket and a free throw from Uthoff, Iowa led 65-63, but the Mavericks stayed with it, as another Carter three tied it a final time at 66-66 with just over six minutes to play. The Hawkeyes then began to pull away, building up to a 10-point lead at 78-68 with 2:08 to go. Free throws helped Iowa maintain its lead, and the Hawkeyes went on to take the win, 83-75.

“I'm happy to have had this opportunity to come in here and play,” head coach Derrin Hansen said. “Carver-Hawkeye Arena is a great place, and a lot of great players have played here. To have our players come and experience a place like this with fans like this was a great thing.

“I'm really proud of our guys' effort today, and I really thought we battled. Being able to go up and get rebounds against Iowa was big. We have more depth in the front court than we did a year ago allows us to move more people in and out. Have that extra body has really helped us. We'll be better coming out of today.”

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 13, hosting UMKC for the Mavericks' home opener at Ralston Arena. The game is set for 7 p.m., and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com. A live radio broadcast will also be available on KZOT The Zone 2 (1180 AM).
