This Week
The Omaha Mavericks continue their six-game home stand this week with a non-conference series against No. 2 Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16. Friday's game begins at 8:07 p.m., and Saturday's contest faces off at 7:07 p.m.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 5-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the NCHC, good for a tie with St. Cloud State for first place. The Mavericks split their first home NCHC series last weekend, beating and then losing to North Dakota. The Mavs are 2-4-0 at home this year and 7-26-3 all-time against Michigan. Three of UNO's seven wins in the series have come in the last five games.
Michigan makes its first trip to Omaha since February of 2010 when both teams played in the CCHA. The Wolverines are 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 on the road this year. They've posted an all-time record of 9-4-3 in Omaha including a mark of 5-2-1 at the CenturyLink Center. Michigan has not played since sweeping Michigan Tech in Ann Arbor on Nov. 1-2.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks split their first NCHC home series last weekend, beating North Dakota 4-2 on Saturday before dropping a 3-2 decision in Sunday's rematch. On Saturday, Tanner Lane scored the game winner with 7:29 remaining in the third period, and Josh Archibald added an empty net goal late to seal the win. The Mavs got out to a 2-0 lead on tallies by James Polk and Dominic Zombo, but UND fought back to tie the game at 2 after two periods. Ryan Massa made 28 saves in the win.
The following night, UND got the early lead before Ian Brady tied the game on a power play later in the first. In the second, UND built a 3-1 lead on goals by Michael Parks and Drake Caggiula, but another power play tally, this one from Archibald, narrowed the lead to 3-2 after two. UNO could get no closer. The Mavs best chance came when Michael Young hit the crossbar in the dying seconds. Freshman Reed Peters, in his first collegiate action, took the loss with 17 saves during more than 30 minutes of relief work.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a career record of 341-188-47 (.633) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 79-73-16 (.518).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State .
Red Berenson, one of the deans of college hockey coaches, is in his 30th season guiding Michigan. The 1962 graduate of Michigan is 776-372-81 all-time in Ann Arbor, having led the Wolverines to national championships in 1996 and 1998. He is assisted by Billy Powers and Brian Wiseman.
