Hansen Signs Jones, Newsome for 2014-15

OMAHA, Neb. – Jalen Jones and Devin Newsome have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Omaha men's basketball program in 2014-15, head coach Derrin Hansen announced Friday.
Jones, a 6-5, 190-pound guard from Clinton, Iowa, is a three-year letterwinner for coach Nick Lawrence at Clinton High School. As a junior, Jones was a second-team all-state and first-team all-conference selection, averaging 19.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. In his sophomore season, he earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Jones has twice been named to the River City Classic All-Tournament Team. He played AAU ball for the Quad City Elite and Iowa Pump N Run and was teammates with UNO freshman Rylan Murry.
“We are excited to have Jalen as part of our program,” Hansen said. “His versatility and athletic ability will add depth to our wing position. Jalen can play multiple positions and has tremendous ability to shoot the ball and attack the lane, which will fit into our up-tempo style of play.”
Newsome, a 5-9, 165-pound guard from Shawnee, Kan., will come from Shawnee Mission South High School, where he plays for coach Brett McFall. As a junior in 2012-13, Newsome was second-team all-state and second-team All-Sunflower League. He averaged 9.9 points, 2.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.5 steals per game with a 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio, and his 89 percent free throw shooting was second best in school history.
“Devin is extremely quick and a very good ball handler who will help us continue to play at the up-tempo pace we like to play,” Hansen said. “He can shoot the three consistently and makes plays for his teammates. You could tell from the start that Devin would be a great fit for our program. He is a winner and a fierce competitor, and he has great leadership ability – things that will only continue to make our program better.
