
Mavs Host North Dakota in First NCHC Home Series

The Omaha Mavericks begin a six-game home stand this week, welcoming No. 10/11 North Dakota for games on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9-10. Saturday's game begins at 7:07 p.m., and Sunday's game starts at 5:07 p.m. These are UNO's first home games in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 4-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the NCHC, good for a three-way tie with St. Cloud State and Western Michigan for first place. The Mavericks earned back-to-back 3-2 overtime wins at Denver last weekend. The Mavs are 1-3-0 at home this year following a sweep at the hands of Cornell on Oct. 25-26. The Mavericks are 3-5-0 all-time against North Dakota including a mark of 1-3-0 at home that features a pair of losses last season including the outdoor game at TD Ameritrade Park.
North Dakota comes to Omaha on the heels of two home losses to St. Cloud State last weekend. UND fell 3-2 and 3-1 and now has a record of 2-3-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the NCHC, good for a four-way tie for fourth. North Dakota is 1-1-0 on the road this season, having split a series at Miami on Oct. 18-19. UND is 2-1-0 all-time on the ice of the CenturyLink Center.
Last Time Out
Josh Archibald scored the overtime game-winning goal on back-to-back nights to help the Mavericks sweep Denver by identical 3-2 scores at Magness Arena in Denver. On Friday, Jake Guentzel and Ian Brady each scored for the Mavericks, but the Pioneers tied the game both times to force overtime. In OT, Archibald converted a pass from Guentzel during a two-on-one break for the game winner. Ryan Massa stopped 33 shots in the UNO goal for his first win of the season. Archibald figured into the scoring of all three UNO goals, earning the primary assists on the others.
On Saturday, the Mavs spotted the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the second period before getting a pair of goals from Brock Montpetit to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra frame, Brian Cooper set up Archibald for a quick wrist shot that beat DU goalie Sam Brittain. Freshman Kirk Thompson made 30 saves to pick up his third win of the season. Guentzel and Brady each had two assists.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a career record of 340-187-47 (.633) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 78-72-16 (.518).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State .
Dave Hakstol is in his 10th season leading North Dakota. The 1996 graduate of UND is 237-122-38 all-time at his alma mater. He is assisted by Brad Berry and Dane Jackson.
